holding syrian citizenship is not grounds for torture ... its like every one who lives in syria should endure what he did?? ... really - are there words here that are appropriate?

    hehe, loyalty to one country...

glad for him, mistakes was made, acknowledged and reparation is on the way, which is great even if such an horrible story shouldn't happen in the first place...

Now time for the USA and Syria to pay for their own mistake, this innocent man was tortured for NO reason... other than his origin...

He'll never see a dime from the US or Syria...

Because, I beleive in loyalty to one country... not to hard to understand... pretty simple actually... as far as the money goes... he doesn't deserve the money from us or the US, Syria tortured him not us and the US deported him to Syria which is there right since he claims syrian citizenship...As far as the US deporting him goes, if they have a choice between sending him back to Syria or us then I'm willing to bet they choose Syria every time. Why doesn't he sue Syria? They tortured him.

You don't really think for a second that it was really the Syrian gov't who wanted him there and then did the torturing, do you?

I don't think the US would pay because their actions where based on the information provided by Canada. Had the Canadian government not deemed him a terrorist and the US still deported him to Syria then they would be liable.

Well, if the USA don't feel like they owe him something, then at least they should get him out of the terrorist list and acknowledge the mistake... for the reparation i don't think the guy need any more money from a govt....

He only got deported because he maintained his syrian citizenship, if he'd dropped it, they would have deported him back to Canada. Like I said they come from their shit hole countries for a better way of life and when the opportunity arises they do not drop their citizenship. duh.

this is what you wrote ... sounds to me like you are saying that because he has his syrian citizenship - that he somehow should expect to be tortured ...

What if your dad is Italian and your mom American and you lived in Italy for 10 years and then moved to the US

Would you only be loyal to Italy? Or wouldn't you want to keep your Italian citizenship when you move to the US? Or would you become and American citizen and forget your loyalty to Italy?
    THANK YOU, LOSTDAWG!

If I made that choice then I would become American...I think we can agree to disagree on this subject. I do not know if your Canadian or not, but their are citizens of this countrywho have been wrongly jailed and have never come close to the degree of compensation this guy got.

So why does he get more than those other folks? Is Harper trying to get votes?

    Most likely.

You got me there. I thought these people were supplying a route for the insurgents into Iraq. So again I ask.............Who was really doing the torturing if he would have been on their side. Oh great blind one.

    We'll disagree, then.

I'm not Canadian, and I think people who have been wrongly imprisoned deserve compensation and even more so if they were tortured.

Arar is also, whether you like it or not, a citizen of Canada.
    THANK YOU, LOSTDAWG!

We didn't deport him, the states did, syria tortured him, and now our tax dollars are compensating him, when syria should be, you can't see that. In all honesty though I shouldn't reply to this post, because people like you who insult people knowly are not worthy of discussing this with.

So the states should also pay, does'nt matter how much info they got from canada on Azar, america should not be sending people to get tortured.

Well that's how I feel anyway.

everyone knows you ain't gonna get squat from syria - he has no recourse there ... the reality is that the rcmp provided false information to the states which resulted in his deportation ... it is most indeed canada's fault that he was tortured for 2 years ... and he most definitely should be compensated ...

If it weren't for Canada mislabelling him as a terrorist, he wouldn't have been in a Syrian prison to begin with. Can you see that?

If he only had Canadian citizenship and was under suspicion for terrorist connections, the USA might've still deported him to Syria. This isn't the first time since 9/11 that they've deported a Canadian citizen to another country.

If the USA truly thought he was a terrorist threat, it would've made more sense to either hand him over to Canadian authorities - or detain and interrogate him themselves.

But apparently, in addition to the trumped up allegations, Canadian authorities had told the USA that Arar had left Canada for good (which was not true). Secondly, although Harper's apology blames this mess on our previously elected goverment, he and his opposition government (at the time) applauded this deportation. Now they get to put their money where their fat mouths were - unfortunately at taxpayers' expense. If you want to be mad at someone, get mad at our goverment for making a $10-million mistake.

Neither the Canadian government nor Arar himself can go after the USA because they'll probably use some "State Secrets" act to prevent their counter-terrorism measures being revealed in court. And at a time when the USA can barely nail Syria to the wall for funding Hezbollah, you're probably not going to get much accountability from Syria on Arar.

No matter how you play the blame game, it's Canada who fired the first shot. Hopefully now, we'll get our shit together so that we don't get stuck with another multi-million dollar bill.
