DALLAS - Convenience store operator 7-Eleven Inc. is dropping Venezuela-backed Citgo as its gasoline supplier at more than 2,100 locations and switching to its own brand of fuel.

The retailer said Wednesday it will purchase fuel from several distributors, including Tower Energy Group of Torrance, Calif., Sinclair Oil of Salt Lake City, and Houston-based Frontier Oil Corp.

Citgo is a Houston-based subsidiary of Venezuela's state-owned oil company, and the foreign parent became a public-relations issue for 7-Eleven because of comments by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.

Chavez has called President George W. Bush the devil and an alcoholic. The U.S. government has warned that Chavez is a destabilizing force in Latin America.

Chabris said a boycott of Citgo gasoline would hurt the 4,000 employees of the U.S. subsidiary, who have no connection to Venezuela.

7-Eleven had been considering creating its own brand of fuel since at least early last year. Company officials said at the time they had spoken with independent fuel distributors.

So you buy nothing from stations supplied by Saudi Arabia?

    I have a question...
"Convenience store operator 7-Eleven Inc. is dropping Venezuela-backed Citgo as its gasoline supplier at more than 2,100 locations and switching to its own brand of fuel."
    ...
Why wasn't 7-Eleven selling 'its own brand of fuel' the whole time?

I'm not sure which stations receive their gas from Saudi Arabia. I do know that Citgo gets the majority of its gas from Venezuela and Chavez. I think Chavez is a douche and I refuse to support him. If I have to choose between the Sauds and Chavez, I'm going with Saudi Arabia.

I dunno, but i'm sure it's gonna have quality issues.

This is a great time for some smart entrepreneur to start his own gas company and get the juice from chavez, i'm sure chavez would cut a great deal at this point just to hit back at america and 7 eleven, a new gas station that will undercut the competition.

anyone have a couple hundred million to invest?

of course I don't know if the system would allow something like that, but I think it's kinda interesting to think about.

You do know what kind of government Saudi Arabia has, right? Does Wahabbism strike a chord?

But it's good to know you're more afraid of words than actions.

    .

i'm not too familiar with Wahabbism but all I know is that the sauds are corrupt, very corrupt.

Imagine a government that oppresses it's own people, a government/leaders that live in palaces while it's people on the street go hungry, such a rich country that does almost nothing to help people. not even it's own people.

Actually I hadn't heard of Wahhabism or Wahhabi Islam. But thanks to the internet I did a little research and learned something new. I would gladly stop buying my gas from Saudi Arabia or any other foreign country, but that isn't realistic.

Wahabbism is a strict (beyond strict) interpretation of Islam, and is pretty much the official government of Saudi Arabia. And rich doesn't even begin to explain how rich these people are. People go on and on about oppression under Saddam's regime - yes it existed - but the Saudi's make him look like a lightweight made out of kittens and buttercups.

But, still, it didn't stop Bush from holding hands in the White House garden.

And, after all, Chavez did say all those mean, nasty things about Bush - pwababwy hert his feewings.

No, at the moment it isn't realistic; but if we're going to single out world leaders for grievious offences, Chavez isn't the one we should be focusing on. He's a blowhard enjoying his time on the world stage. The Saudis on the other hand......

I wonder if their gasoline comes in the same flavors as their Slurpees.

Venezuela's human rights and personal freedoms under Chavez, while not as bad as Saudi Arabia's under Wahhabism, are still deplorable. I'm still just pissed that the guy came here and took a shit on America.

yeah, maybe they'll have "cherry" "blueberry" and "orange" in place of 87,89 and 93. Could be a good selling point, anything that has to do with food seems to draw americans.

He was at an UN building...I guess anything said against the US should be refrained there....give me a break...can say whatever he wants regardless of what it comes out as....

    Ridiculous!

What does business have to do with politics?

People would still buy the gasoline without knowing where it is coming from. Except now I'm not going to 7-11 any more because I know they are a political corporation.

The world is like a ride in an amusement park, and when you choose to go on it you think it's real because that's how powerful our minds are. The ride goes up and down, around and around, it has thrills and chills, and it's very brightly colored, and it's very loud, and it's fun for a while. Many people have been on the ride a long time, and they begin to wonder, "Hey, is this real, or is this just a ride?" And other people have remembered, and they come back to us and say, "Hey, don't worry; don't be afraid, ever. Because this is just a ride." And we...kill those people. "Shut him up! I've got a lot invested in this ride, shut him up! Look at my furrows of worry, look at my big bank account, and my family. This has to be real." It's just a ride. But we always kill the good guys who try and tell us that, you ever notice that? And let the demons run amok? But it doesn't matter, because it's just a ride. And we can change it any time we want. It's only a choice. No effort, no work, no job, no savings of money. Just a simple choice, right now, between fear and love. The eyes of fear want you to put bigger locks on your doors, buy guns, close yourself off. The eyes of love instead see all of us as one. Here's what we can do to change the world, right now, to a better ride. Take all that money we spend on weapons and defenses each year and instead spend it feeding and clothing and educating the poor of the world, which it would pay for many times over, not one human being excluded, and we could explore space, together, both inner and outer, forever, in peace.

hehe, yeah true, but my point was about people who don't mind supporting them.
  • Our estimated oil reserves are listed at 21 billion barrels according to these charts. If we continue to produce 8-9 million barrels a day that should run us dry in 6-8 years. At this time, we will be forced to beg Mr Chavez for his oil again so I don’t see the logic behind 7/11's move.

It's embarrassing (or hilarious) that these crazy leaders get rich with our money. Your/my money helped Saddam build his palaces, helps fund Iran’s nuclear program and empowers Chavez.
