Choice Would Be On Ballots Under New Bill

POSTED: 1:43 pm EST January 5, 2007
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Voters would have the option of choosing "none of the above" under a bill proposed to avoid confusion over whether people mean to leave ballots blank, an issue at the center of a disputed congressional election.

State Sen. Mike Bennett, the bill's sponsor, wants the additional option to prevent a repeat of the race between Republican Vern Buchanan and Democrat Christine Jennings. Buchanan was declared the winner by 369 votes, but more than 18,000 ballots didn't have a choice in the race.

Currently, it's impossible for elections officials to determine whether voters purposely meant to leave the race blank or if they didn't make a choice by accident.

"What we want to do is give people an option to write on there, 'I don't want to vote in this race. I don't really like any of these people. I don't feel comfortable,"' said Bennett, R-Bradenton.

I'm all for that. But I don't know what this sentence had to do with anything:

Why does it matter to election officials, other than curiosity?

Well, if you were an election official, wouldn't it bug you?

    :D

    I don't know either.
  • That's cool. Gives us another way to say "fuck you" to politicians if nothing else. What do you think the ast presidential race would've looked like had that been on the ballot?

Then a candiate should legally change his name to "None-of Theabove". He'd win by a landslide everytime he runs.

OMG, it's about time a state's done this! I've been saying that "none of the above" should be an option for about a year now. I think it would get more voters out there to actually vote and make sure it's known that we don't like the candidates. Perhaps if "none of the above" wins the majority, that would mean we would have an election "do-over"? :D One would hope, AND it makes sense.

    So, in an election:

Candidate A gets 25% of the vote
Candidate B gets 25% of the vote
"None of the Above" gets 50% of the vote

Should they scrap hold another election since clearly the majority of the people don't want A or B?

What we SHOULD have is instand runoff voting, but that'll be very difficult to get with the major parties so opposed to it.

In this case, the winner would be A or B depending on who had the most votes. In the extremely unlikely case that they had the exact same number of votes, there would probably be a re-count, then I dunno.
