WASHINGTON, May 30 /PRNewswire/ --
The first study to rank countries around the world according to their peacefulness and the drivers that create and sustain their peace was launched today. The Global Peace Index studied 121 countries from Algeria to Zimbabwe and its publication comes one week before the leaders of the world's richest countries gather for the G8 summit in Germany to discuss issues of global concern.
The rankings show that even among the G8 countries there are significant differences in peacefulness: While Japan was the most peaceful of the G8 countries, at a rank of five in the Index, Russia neared the bottom at number 118. The Global Peace Index also reveals that countries which had a turbulent time for parts of the twentieth century, such as Ireland and Germany, have emerged as peace leaders in the 21st century
(Reuters) - The United States is among the least peaceful nations in the world, ranking 96th between Yemen and Iran, according to a new index released on Wednesday that evaluates 121 nations based on their peacefulness.
According to the Global Peace Index, created by The Economist Intelligence Unit, Norway is the most peaceful nation in the world and Iraq is the least, just after Russia, Israel and Sudan.

not surprising these results really ...

the study takes into account social programs and overall violence within the country ... we should drop in the rankings as our military spending increases ...
the list seems to be relative to social investmetn ...

I thought the Netherlands would be ranked higher...

damn hippy
they should all be ranked at the bottom considering they all have nuclear weapons. currently targeted on each others major civilian targets to ensure decisive catastrophic damage within minutes.
i would say the list is a tad short sighted for that reason, much like our enlightened species on the subject
huh? Canada is not a peaceful country in which to live? seems confusing...isn't that what the list is saying?
maybe someone could clarify...
Oh wait...here's their methodology:

Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth.

I would love to rank #1 on this list for sure. I'd love it if we (and other countries) would stop thinking of us as the world police force. I'd love it if we'd tell every other country to fuck themselves. Let's get out of NATO and the UN. Let's trade with whomever wants to trade, but otherwise let each other kill themselves.
But seriously, even with our fucked up notion of forcing democracy on people, I'd rather be here, under our "standard of living" than just about anywhere else.
I think it doesn't all have to do with material wealth but with over all standards, everyone included.
Imo, the US isn't forced to police anything and they don't choose to get involved unless it's directly benefiting them.

I can't help everyone. I can help myself, my family, my neighbors & my community, so I start there.
I agree with you. We aren't forced. But for some reason an obligation has been assumed here and abroad that we should be on the hook financially and militarily. I would love to see that assumption disappear. The costs are way too high in terms of loss of life, dollars, reputation, etc...
is "standard of living" subjective? I think to a point. Norway is great in that respect. But I would never wanna live in norway. and just because a person would not want to live in a place does not take away from it being a fairly decent place to be.
--
I agree that it is subjective. I just didn't think of this "GlobalPeace" list as a "standards of living" list. There are many countries in the top 100 on this list that have fairly horrible standards of living, at least to my view.
Actually where is Malta? I remember reading Malta was the #1 place for most satisfied citizens or "happiness factor" places to live (or something like that) in the world.
Malta... you still there?... did global warming sink you yet?

in fact, dubya ran on this in 2000!! he criticized gore and clinton for kosovo and went on about how the us militarty should not be used for nation building and how it's not our role to police the world and if we did that how ppl would dislike us....i remember when you sang that song about today, now it's tomorrow and everything has changed....but the reality is this was just a lie the whole time as they had already wanted to go into iraq
he had a voice that was strong and loud and
i swallowed his facade cos i'm so
eager to identify with
someone above the crowd
someone who seemed to feel the same
someone prepared to lead the way
Oh, but hey, the terrorists changed everything on 9/11. It's their fault.
