U.S. confirms it held 12 juveniles at Guantanamo
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — The U.S. has revised its count of juveniles ever held at Guantanamo Bay to 12, up from the eight it reported in May to the United Nations, a Pentagon spokesman said Sunday.
The government has provided a corrected report to the U.N. committee on child rights, according to Navy Cmdr. Jeffrey Gordon. He said the U.S. did not intentionally misrepresent the number of detainees taken to the isolated Navy base in southeast Cuba before turning 18.
"As we noted to the committee, it remains uncertain the exact age of many of the juveniles held at Guantanamo, as most of them did not know their own date of birth or even the year in which they were born," he said.
A study released last week by the Center for the Study of Human Rights in the Americas concluded the U.S. has held at least a dozen juveniles at Guantanamo, including a Saudi who committed suicide in 2006.
"The information I got was from their own sources, so they didn't have to look beyond their own sources to figure this out," said Almerindo Ojeda, director of the center at the University of California, Davis.
Rights groups say it is important for the U.S. military to know the real age of those it detains because juveniles are entitled to special protection under international laws recognized by the United States.
Eight of the 12 juvenile detainees identified by the human rights center have been released, according to the study.
Two of the remaining detainees are scheduled to face war-crimes trials in January. Canadian Omar Khadr, now 21, was captured in July 2002 and is charged with murder for allegedly throwing a grenade that killed a U.S. special forces soldier. Mohammed Jawad, an Afghan who is about 24, faces attempted murder charges for a 2002 grenade attack that wounded two U.S. soldiers.
The study identified the only other remaining juvenile as Muhammed Hamid al Qarani of Chad.
The Saudi who hanged himself with two other detainees in 2006, Yasser Talal al-Zahrani, was 17 when he arrived at Guantanamo within days of the military prison opening in January 2002, according to the study.
About 250 prisoners remain at Guantanamo on suspicion of terrorism or links to al-Qaeda or the Taliban.

Good old America, safeguarding humanity and its right to basic liberties and fair justice.
that's not even half of it ... testimony from soldiers at the scene that did not corroborate with the story was thrown out ... they tortured a confession out of him ... every other nationalist from most other "ally" countries have been able to get their detainee and try them in a court of law except canada ...
They are POWs (enemy combatants) not criminals. You can't put them on trial, you can only release them when the war on terror is over.
Bush said they would torture kids on a few press releases, and media articles.
Why is anyone surprised?
and reveling in it's loyalty. It's made by forming coalitions
over specific principles, goals, and policies.

...are those who've helped us.
Right 'round the corner could be bigger than ourselves.
I'm sorry, but I don't care what is at risk, but the "good guys" do not torture. Half of those people, if not all have never done a damn thing wrong, yet under the good ol US of A they are being tortured.
We threw the Japanese in camps during World War 2 and that was wrong, and it is no different now.
You make absolutely no sense here, so I gather at some point this created war on terror is going to have an end. Get it through your head this war on terror will NEVER end. Any incident around the world can be deemed part of the so called war on terror from now to eternity.
You want to hold these people till then without trail and some without even being charged? Secret Renditions America has fallen to an All Time Low.
Peace

Sorry, Obama has no plans to do that at this time.
:(
If I opened it now would you not understand?
He also said that he would bring new faces to the white house and all he has done is recycle some pro patriot act,pro iraq war torture people.
But even if he does close gitmo, infact I think he will! He needs to do that, it will make America look like the good guys again. But at the same time he will continue the war on terror, killing and torture in other locations.
But hey, he closed gitmo!...It's all image. But that's all Obama is.
You'll be happy when you are proved wrong.
for talking about a guy who hasn't had a chance to prove himself, you sure are pessimistic.. Is the glass ALWAYS half empty for you? Seriously.
Obama may be shit, but give him a fucking chance to prove it or not.
Whether it's image or not he will be scrutinized and watched in every move or decision he makes. Which many here have already done especially if he continues to speak of change.
Better to see him than use words, we shall see cause America will be watching.
Peace

Yeah, let's see. I'm just worried that many of his supporters already have given him passes for his choices for the new admin....and he's picked some bad people.
Add that to his foreign policy views and solutions. Yet he gets another pass.
I know America will be watching, but will they care, or do anything?
That's another story.
I base it on his speeches, his thoughts of 'innocent' Georgia, Israel, His supporting of the diet patriot act.
His choices for advisors, vp, chief of staff and now hillary.
It's like when you see someone building a house upside down, what do you do? just hope that it just ends up right side up? No, you scream and say "dude, you are building that shit the wrong way!" . You dont wait until it's done.
I care, if he fucks this up I'll surely have something to say. Nothing has gotten off the ground as yet except some questionable people he has hired or is hiring. Let's see what happens when they get to work will be change or more of the same.
He's starting form the pits with this job left by GWB who has to go down as one of the worst Presidents ever.
Peace

But time will tell, I hope i'm wrong!
i guess on the bright side so far the ppl who oversaw this didn't make it to obama's intelligence team like the guy who helped push false iraq intel or the extraordinary rendition and warrantless wire taping

Give it a couple of days! Maybe a week?
the source ...
that's really what it's all about ... until americans realize what the actual source of terrorism is - you will NEVER solve this problem ...
1) The prisoners can be released when:
A) The country of origin has the means to take the prisoner back. No trial should be taken place for any of the prisoners. Only hearings within the jail should be taken to make sure the POW is a POW and not a innocent civilian.
All the information from the POW is obtained.
The war on terror will end. Just like every war.
I will indeed be happy if I'm proven wrong.
Give him a fucking chance to prove what? What do/did you base your hope on, your belief in him? He campaigned for two years, I've seen him go in one direction and to me it's the wrong one. He has flip flopped on issues I find important. He has promised his unconditional support for Israel, he support the patriot act (but, but it's Patriot Act Light!). His views on Russia are disturbing as well. Let's not forget the cabinet he's picking...
You see hope in that. He can prove he will curb "Russian aggression", he can continue to support Israel and thus continue to fuck up the Middle East, he can "stop" Iran, which wasn't a threat at first for Obama, but now he's prepared to use all means, he can keep troops in Iraq longer than he initially promised, indeed promised.
This is just what he said he'd do. You can call me pessimistic but to me all of that sounds like bad policies and more of the same. I don't know where you see the change in that or how you can be optimistic about this. Do you want the US to curb Russian aggression? Do you want to invade Iran because of the same old false propaganda? (Obama: "Its president denies the Holocaust and threatens to wipe Israel off the map.")
That's pure bullshit propaganda, inexcusable. Where's the people taking responsibilty now? Obama asked for action and work. Well, he's talking pure bullshit, telling lies in order to justify war - stop him, stand up to him. Hold him accountable for his lies.
But no, Obama is all about hope. Just hope it'll be okay. Just hope that he was joking.
edit: Also, stopping terrorism at the source is absolutely impossible by violence.
