Wear the grudge like a crown of negativity

Wear the grudge like a crown
Of negativity
Calculate what you will
Will not tolerate
Desperate to control
All and everything
Unable to forgive
Your scarlet letterman

Clutch it like a cornerstone
Otherwise it all comes down
Justify denials and
Grip 'em to the lonesome end

Clutch it like a cornerstone
Otherwise it all comes down
Terrified of being wrong
Ultimatum prison cell

Saturn ascends
Choose one or ten
Hang on or be
Humbled again
Humbled again

Clutch it like a cornerstone (crescendo)
Otherwise it all comes down
Justify denials and
Grip 'em to the lonesome end

Saturn ascends
Comes 'round again
Saturn ascends
The one, the ten
Ignorant to
The damage done

Wear the grudge like a crown
Of negativity
Calculate what you will
Will not tolerate
Desperate to control
All and everything
Unable to forgive
Your scarlet letterman

Wear the grudge like a crown (crescendo)
Desperate to control
Unable to forgive
And sinking deeper

Defining
Confining
Sinking deeper (sometimes says "AND sinking deeper" in concert)

Controlling
Defining
And we're sinking deeper

Saturn comes back around
To show you everything
Lets you choose what you will
Will not see and then
Drags you down like a stone
Or lifts you up again
Spits you out like a child
Light and innocent

Saturn comes back around
Lifts you up like a child
Or drags you down like a stone
To consume you 'til you
Choose to
Let this go
Choose to
Let this go

Give away the stone
Let the ocean take and transmutate
This cold and fated anchor
Give away the stone
Let the waters kiss and transmutate
These leaden grudges into gold
(gold... gold... gold... gold... gold...
gold... gold... gold... gold...) (decrescendo)

Let go (crescendo)

Let go
Let go
Let go
Let go
standin above the crowd
he had a voice that was strong and loud and
i swallowed his facade cos i'm so
eager to identify with
someone above the crowd
someone who seemed to feel the same
someone prepared to lead the way

Great song.... it applies to so many different situations, personal and global. How many lifes, friendships, relationships have been destroyed because of pride? Because that's all that holding a grudge boils down to: pride.

PS. I'm so excited to finally see Tool again after 5 yrs!

Awesome tune was just blasting that tune yesterday and was thinking of the entire Missle East debacle....

Actually, I caught something interesting in that song:

"Clutch it like a cornerstone. Otherwise it all comes down.
Justify denials and grip 'em to the lonesome end.
Clutch it like a cornerstone. Otherwise it all comes down.
Terrified of being wrong. Ultimatum prison cell."

Let's just say, I was thinking of any implications this song may have into the wars waged by religions. Then this lyric in particular hit me like a cornerstone:

"Saturn comes back around to show you everything
Lets you choose what you will not see and then..."

Based on my prior knowledge of sky-god religions, I knew Tool were referencing something very specific with, "Saturn."

    Choose to let this go:

Jesus evolved from the Saturn god myth of Horus, an ancient egyptian Messiah.

    The parallels are unparalleled:

Both born of the virgin mother - both in a cave, announced by an angel, heralded by a star - both baptised, each baptiser was beheaded - both resisted temptation by the devil - both followed by 12 deciples - both walked on water, cast out demons (or deamons), restored sight to the blind - both transfixed on a mountain - both crucified with two thieves - both buried - both descended into hell - both returned after 3 days.

"Saturn comes back around to show you everything
Lets you choose what you will not see and then
Drags you down like a stone or lifts you up again
Spits you out like a child, light and innocent."

The myth keeps repeating. Though - make no mistake - this is no mystic event! This repetition, it only goes to show how slow humans go through recorded versions of history, how long we take to figure out the foundations of a story, and how little we have progressed since the dawn of recorded history. But, ah - how much farther we can go!

Religion works like a witch hunt.
Instead of hilighting our innocence and inner beauty,
disenchanted doctrines define and control inhuman conceptions of sin,
forgiving men to allow their illness,
and worship that invalid on a cross.
    Ignoring the innocent.

"Saturn ascends. Choose one or ten. Hang on or be humbled again."

    Fellow Christ-Men, fellow Sky-Gods:

    Adad of Assyria
Adonis, Apollo, Heracles ("Hercules") and Zeus of Greece
    Alcides of Thebes
    Attis of Phrygia
    Baal of Phoenicia
    Bali of Afghanistan
    Beddru of Japan
    Buddha of India
    Crite of Chaldea
    Deva Tat of Siam
    Hesus of the Druids
Horus, Osiris, and Serapis of Egypt (whose long-haired, bearded appearance was adopted for the Christ character.)
    Indra of Tibet/India
    Jao of Nepal
    Krishna of India
    Mikado of the Sintoos
    Mithra of Persia
    Odin of the Scandinavians
    Prometheus of Caucasus/Greece
    Quetzalcoatl of Mexico
    Salivahana of Bermuda
Tammuz of Syria (who was, in a typical mythmaking move, later turned into the disciple Thomas)
Thor of the Gauls Universal Monarch of the Sibyls
    Wittoba of the Bilingonese
    Xamolxis of Thrace
    Zarathustra/Zoroaster of Persia
    Zoar of the Bonzes

It's tedious, the very same story, each one repeated and over the interleaving history of the other ones again and again.

The Grudge? The progressive guilt and humility religions have bred into the human family through millennia of disjointed promises from mirror-image prophets all contradicting each other, all just rebel bait (that is, bait for the sinner to seek solace, and thus repetition of his sins) and inchoate conjecture.

    What comes after The Grudge?
    Unconditional War.
10,000 Days of warfare through a labyrinth of untested testament (doctrine indoctrinated as truth.) Questioning humanity's innocence, allowing overlords of men to become masters of war - to wage war on the "guilty."

"Kangaroo done hung the guilty with the innocent."

All while the faithfull are left to forge a new kingdom for those crime-lords, blind and dumb - "High is the way, but our eyes are upon the ground."

"But enough about the collective Judas
Who could deny you were the one who illuminated
Your little piece of the divine."

Now that's thematic artwork! Awesome album/albums/band.
