in reference to the thread where it was stated pearl jam only had maybe 5 political songs and really weren't too political...a nice version of YL from the VA show from the Riot Act tour...a vrey underrated show, imho

I wanna see him
the words i thought i'd never hear say...
i don't ever want to feel this way again
my own brother, he was sent away
and now i'm livin alone forever and a day
i've a feelin i'd like to wish it on away
and i try to find blame and i leave it w/ the president
on the west side, on the front side this letter said my name
it said my brothers comin home in a box or a bag

yeah, can you see them out on the porch?
yeah, but they don't wave
i see them round the front way
yeah, and i know and i know i don't want to stay oh no

when i see them i'd like to wish it all away
and i tried and i fall and i tried to write my congressman
he never says...
on the four lines of a form type letter
said my brother, he's commin home in a box or a bag

yeah, can you see them out on the porch?
yeah, but they don't wave
i see them, round the front way
yeah, and i know and i know i don't want to stay at all
i don't want to stay
don't want to stay
and so on....
standin above the crowd
he had a voice that was strong and loud and
i swallowed his facade cos i'm so
eager to identify with
someone above the crowd
someone who seemed to feel the same
someone prepared to lead the way

  • The main reason that I love Yellow Lebetter is cuz it's not about politic's. And it's not box or a bag, it's "I dont know weather I was the boxer or the bag" get youre fact's right dude cuz it's really pissin me off.
    I’d thank my lucky stars,
    to be livin here today.
‘Cause the flag still stands for freedom,
and they can’t take that away.

And I’m proud to be an American,
where at least I know I’m free.
And I wont forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.

I always thought Eddie changes the lyrics when he sings this song. he probably changes them to fit something political sometimes, others times he doesnt. depends on his mood.

here are the "offical" lyrics from TSIS

unsealed on a porch a letter sat
then you said, i wanna leave it again
once i saw her on a beach of weathered sand
and on the sand i wanna leave it again yeah
on a weekend i wanna wish it all away yeah
and they called and i said that i want what i said
and then i call out again
and the reason oughta' leave her calm i know
i said i know what i wear not the boxer or the bag
ah yeah can you see them
out on the porch yeah but they don't wave
i see them round the front way yeah
and i know and i know i don't want to stay
    make me cry
i see ooh i don't know why there's something else
i wanna go my own a-way
oh i said i don't i don't know whether i was the boxer or the bag
ah yeah can you see them
out on the porch yeah but they don't wave
but i see them round the front way yeah
and i know and i know i don't wanna stay at all
    i don't wanna stay yeah
    i don't wanna stay
    i don't wanna stay
i don't don't wanna oh yeah ooh ohh

wow, it doesn't take much to piss you off, then, eh? as jlew stated ed changes the lyrics a lot to that song, so maybe you shoul dbe the one doing some fact checking? and try some anger management or breathing exercises or somethin...christ

also, you misquoted the line yourself as you put weather as in rain, snow...:p

How long have you been a Pearl Jam fan? Out of simple curiousity.

That song probably has the most variable and unintelligible lyrics of any song in the pearl jam catalogue. Read the liner notes in the lost dogs album. Even Mike McCready himself says he has no idea what its about, and he wrote the music!

Eddie has a way of turning just about any song political if he feels like. Wishlist is another one that regulary ends up with a completely different message to the original.
It doesn't matter if you're male, female, or confused; black, white, brown, red, green, yellow; gay, lesbian; redneck cop, stoned; ugly; military style, doggy style; fat, rich or poor; vegetarian or cannibal; bum, hippie, virgin; famous or drunk-you're either an asshole or you're not!

Hey Plates, isn't it kinda funny when Ed pulls the other guys onto the stage with their chains and makes them play these political songs they disagree with so much?! What a hoot!

Hey abook, its even funnier how often you answer for Kabong.

And I doubt most of the guys give two shits about every lyric in every song. As long as Stone gets to groove and Mike gets his solos, I'm pretty sure they simply enjoy playing ROCK AND ROLL. I don't think I ever implied that any band member was forced to play anything.

Not to mention, they only have to endure a handful of 'political songs'.

Not quite sure what you or your buddy's point really is here.

Answer what? You didn't ask a question.

I'll have to continue to disagree with your 'handful' opinion.

And I'll let him answer as to what his point was so you don't get your panties in a bunch...although, I think it was fairly obvious.

Okay, i didnt ask a question. Got me there.

But it seems quite often when a COMMENT is directed towards kabong you pop up two minutes later with a retort. And, unless his point AND yours is that one of their political songs is political, then well done. Otherwise, this was just another of many wasteful posts. My 2 cents.

You do realize that political and social is two different things right?

Do you realize politics is all about society and governing it....pretty social to me.

Dunno which politics you've been watching the last couple hundred years. ;)

Not all issues that are social are "political" in nature, and not all political issues are "social" in nature. The two arent dependant on one another. Unless you're a liberal who wants the politics of government to control your social issues.

Government is about guiding and deciding what's best for society. What social issues are you talking about that don't involve government or political stances?

Lets avoid such a broad topic as Liberal Socialism where politics and govt intrude on every social aspect of our lives versus TRUE conservative separation of politics/govt in our social lives. Too big a topic to get into, and neither one of us would ever even slightly change each others minds. Have a grrrrrrreat day!

i thought the song wasn't political? you guys need to make up your mind, first ppl cry it's not political at all, now you say it's been obvious all along!

everyone knew this version, you say? i think you, like you're wannabe martyr complex is full of shite
    standin above the crowd

    someone above the crowd

on it's face, that song is not political...but, in its dynamic delivery, it can become anything on any given night. lately, it has been delivered as a political jab, which is not a bad thing. is it really something to argue about? a song can be anything that you want it to be...no matter what the writer means to convey...
    I'll dig a tunnel

I think its funnier when he pulls 10k Corporation hating music fans into a corprate named venue, owned by clear channel, with tickets purchased through ticketmaster for an album promoted on VH1 and AOL.

Maybe your ignorant ass is the reason PJ is giving the south the shaft. I'm gonna go ahead and proof your post for you in hopes that you can someday write an intelligible and coherent sentence. Here we go...

Once again, lose the apostrophe) right dude cuz it's really pissin me off.

Further, your attitude is unwelcome here, IMO. Getting pissed off at someone for absolutely no reason says a lot about your character. It blows my mind that you've been on the board since 2004 - obviously hesitant to post, and you waste one of your few on something like this.

Well you can look at that as being ironic that he's using their vehicle to deliver messages that are sometimes against them. Sounds pretty smart to me.

still supporting it. Its just as ironic as using Saudi money to wage a war on terror.

I dont blame pearl jam for doing what they need to get their voices heard, but a conservative supporter of Pearl Jam is no more hypocritical than Pearl Jam supporting major corporations.

Well, the bottom line is their music and they want their music heard. All the political mumbo jumbo is secondary and they've said that before. Music first.

I dont recall myself ever saying or posting that YLB wasnt a political song. Tho it is definitely more political on a given night than other nights. I think you're full of shite. You've proved yourself to be nothing but pompous, and redundant, to say the least. Hats off to you kabong. Stick to your 9/11 theories, your breakdown of song meanings leaves much to be desired.

For kabong's next trick, he will prove that Led Zeppelin's songs were about women. And that Alice in Chains songs are about drugs. Tune in for the newsbreaking details!

I think they're knowingly doing a trade-off. The anti-ticketmaster thing made it really hard for thier fans to see them, doing corporate arena gigs are a way that they can still get thier message out to as many people as possible.
