you might not have fillings but thats more likely due to the fact that Irish people cant afford candy and sugar. Scotland stopped it a while back, but thats because we discovered this thing called toothpaste which has fluoride in it... :p

as the article said, i'd rather have the choice when it comes to giving my kids flouridated water (i dont know if its a word either Hitchy, but it sounds good ;) )

  • fluoridation of public water supplies has been a great thing. as long as the concentration does not exceed 1.0ppm, it has shown to have a significant effect on the decrease in dental caries.

You know what really sucks. My town had some of the best tasting water in the entire US (no kidding, it won a contest) and some fucking asshole decided it needed to flourified (floooooooourified...floooooooourified!) and now it tastes like everyone else's shitty tap water. So what if there were a few billionths ppm more bacteria than what some hippie decided was healthy! We've never had a problem with people getting sick from our water EVER! I miss that water. It was truely awesome water!

the aim of fluoridating water supplies is not to decrease the amount of bacteria in it. it has nothing to do with improving "water that makes people sick".

F is tasteless. chlorine on the other hand is a different story - it is used to kill off bacteria and makes the water taste like shit.

  • Fluoride rocks. My parents made me brush with a special flouride solution when I was a kid, and it's probably a big part of why I've never had a cavity.

Putting shit in people's water, however, does not rock.

I can no longer sit back and allow Communist infiltration, Communist indoctrination, Communist subversion and the international Communist conspiracy to sap and impurify all of our precious bodily fluids.

Fluoridation is the most monstrously conceived and dangerous communist plot we have ever had to face.

El Kabong, do you realize that in addition to fluoridating water, why, there are studies underway to fluoridate salt, flour, fruit juices, soup, sugar, milk... ice cream. Ice cream, El Kabong, children's ice cream. You know when fluoridation first began?

Nineteen hundred and forty-six. Nineteen forty-six, El Kabong. How does that coincide with your post-war Commie conspiracy, huh? It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? A foreign substance is introduced into our precious bodily fluids without the knowledge of the individual. Certainly without any choice. That's the way your hard-core Commie works.

I wonder how much of that is due to genetics. My parents did the same with me, but I have had 4 cavities (although I did inherit straight teeth, never needed braces). One of the cavities is in my wisdom teeth and I can't find a dentist that will just fill it. They all want to pull my wisdom teeth.

Also, this article is a bit disturbing to me, because all of the pediatricians recommend that baby formula be made with fluorinated water. They even make special fluorinated bottle water for just that purpose. They stress giving your child fluorinated tap water opposed to bottled water.

That's a good question on genetics. Not sure of the science -- I've never looked into it. My parents both are rife with cavities, but obviously that could be from other causes, rather than lack of flouride.

I've always kind of laughed at the people freaked out about flouride in their water. But, at the same time, I've never looked into it. Plus, I've been on well water for most of my life so I don't really care ;)

"a) Risk to the brain. According to the National Research Council (NRC), fluoride can damage the brain. Animal studies conducted in the 1990s by EPA scientists found dementia-like effects at the same concentration (1 ppm) used to fluoridate water, while human studies have found adverse effects on IQ at levels as low as 0.9 ppm among children with nutrient deficiencies and 1.8 ppm among children with adequate nutrient intake. (7-10)

    b) Risk to the thyroid gland. According to the NRC, fluoride is an “endocrine disrupter.” Most notably, the NRC has warned that doses of fluoride (0.1-0.3 mg/kg/day) achievable by drinking fluoridated water, may reduce the function of the thyroid among individuals with low-iodine intake. Reduction of thyroid activity can lead to loss of mental alertness, depression and weight gain (11)"

Mr Kabong... most will laugh at you, but the others will laugh with you.

anyone know what the largest human organ is? thats right, your skin. you can avoid drinking it, but you cant avoid bathing in it. some people wonder why we are an intelectually docile nation that is entertained by celebrity lives and meaningless garbage? and others wonder why our nation is the fattest in world history ( i need to lose a few like most)? maybe, just maybe this has something to do with it? i am not saying it is so, but i am open to discussion. is it a possible cospiracy? of course its possible... is it just a mistake that needs to be corrected? i think that could be as well.

thanks for the link, pretty interesting.

the health of your teeeth is fairly simple. dont eat things that are bad for them, or bones (no sugar) and keep them clean by flossing and brushing. no chemicals needed, just regular maintenance

fluoridation of public water supplies has been a great thing. as long as the concentration does not exceed 1.0ppm, it has shown to have a significant effect on the decrease in dental caries.

    3) Contrary to previous belief, fluoride has minimal benefit when swallowed. When water fluoridation first began in the 1940s and '50s, dentists said that fluoride needed to be swallowed in order to be most effective. This belief, however, has now been discredited by an extensive body of modern research (1).

According to the Centers for Disease Control, fluoride's "predominant effect is posteruptive and topical" (2). In other words, any benefits that accrue from the use of fluoride, come from the direct application of fluoride to the outside of teeth (after they have erupted into the mouth) and not from ingestion. There is no need and little benefit, therefore, exposing all other tissues to fluoride by swallowing it.

    6) Ingestion of fluoride has little benefit, but many risks. Whereas fluoride's benefits come from topical contact with teeth, its risks to health (which involve many more tissues than the teeth) result from being swallowed.

Adverse effects from fluoride ingestion have repeatedly been associated with intake levels atttainable by people living in fluoridated areas. For example:

    a) Risk to the brain.

Reduction of thyroid activity can lead to loss of mental alertness, depression and weight gain (11)

    c) Risk to bones. According to the NRC, fluoride can diminish bone strength and increase the risk for bone fracture. While the NRC was unable to determine what level of fluoride is safe for bones, it noted that the best available information40 suggests that fracture risk may be increased at levels as low 1.5 ppm, which is only slightly higher than the concentration (0.7-1.2 ppm) added to water for fluoridation. (12)

    d) Risk for bone cancer. Animal and human studies – including a recent study from a team of Harvard scientists – have found a connection between fluoride and a serious form of bone cancer (osteosarcoma) in males under the age of 20. The connection between fluoride and osteosarcoma has been described by the National Toxicology Program as "biologically plausible." Up to half of adolescents who develop osteosarcoma die within a few years of diagnosis. (13-16)

    e) Risk to kidney patients. People with kidney disease have a heightened susceptibility to fluoride toxicity. The heightened risk stems from an impaired ability to excrete fluoride from the body. As a result, toxic levels of fluoride can accumulate in the bones, intensify the toxicity of aluminum build-up, and cause or exacerbate a painful complex bone disease known as renal osteodystrophy. (17-19)

    im fucked.

if i have fluoride in my water, ill go crazy and die. if i dont, my teeth will fall out. if i drink milk, ill have strong bones but prostate cancer and heart disease. if i dont, ill have osteoporosis. if i eat a lot of meat, ill be thin and avoid empty carbs but die of high cholesterol. if i eat no meat, ill be fat from pastas and carbs and have no protein or muscle mass, but at least my heart will work.

you are all fucked. nobody here is healthy or can be healthy. everything good for you will kill you and everything bad for you will save you. it's hopeless. we're all going to die!

i've never had fluorinated water so i can't say; but there are proper ways to eat and be healthy. man has poisoned most of your food; i agree. they put cattle in feed lots then pump them full of drugs because they know the animals will get sick. if you want to get an idea of what's in your meat go to http://www.jefferslivestock.com and see what is used in raising animals.
but; not everyone uses those practices. the meat i sell will lower your cholesterol; strenghten your heart; fight cancer and allow your body to properly absorb vitamins. and i can prove every word with scientific evidence.
so there is a proper way to eat.

i dont want to know what's in my meat ;) i know about the whole organic/natural food thing. i was referring more to the fact that every week doctors offer new studies that show that X food, which used to be good for you, will kill you. and vice versa. ive kinda just tuned it out. i doubt they use organic products, it's true. i worry about the effects that sort of thing has on our food supply. but at the moment, i barely have time to get to the grocery on a regular basis, let alone worry about what im buying. once i get a job where i can afford to pay for organic products and have the time to find them, i fully intend to do so.

if you're interested; check out http://www.eatwild.com it's not about eating wild animals. it provides information about the benefits of eating animals raised naturally and provides a directory where you can find farms locally or have the products shipped right to your door. you're buying farm direct so in most cases; you're paying less than the grocery. if you have health problems; i strongly suggest at least checking it out. mostly the scientific research.

here's a few things you should know:

Rankins, D. L., Jr. "The Importance of by-Products to the U.S. Beef Industry." Vet Clin North Am Food Anim Pract 18, no. 2 (2002): 207-11, v. "The use of by-products as nutrient sources for beef cattle will continue to be driven by economics. As landfill prices continue to escalate, more by-product will become economically viable as cattle feed. These considerations will be counter-balanced by safety concerns. American consumers are becoming increasingly concerned with the production aspects of their food. The environmental concerns associated with additional landfills will have to be balanced against which by-products consumers will accept in the production of the beef that they consume. These will most assuredly heighten over the coming years."

Gilka, J., J. Bartos, V. Gajduskova, M. Malikova, J. Masek, J. Sic, and Z. Matyas. "Foreign Substances in the Meat and Organs of Bulls Fed on a Diet of Swine and Poultry Fecal Waste." Vet Med (Praha) 26, no. 11 (1981): 651-60.
Loerch, S. C. "Efficacy of Plastic Pot Scrubbers as a Replacement for Roughage in High- Concentrate Cattle Diets." J Anim Sci 69, no. 6 (1991): 2321-8.

there's much more but this will give you an idea of why the foods you eat; make you sick.

Feeding animal by-products has been banned since like 1997 and the first N. American cases of mad cow disease.

actually; mad cow disease was linked to feeding cattle bovine byproducts. the bones were being ground up and fed back to cattle thus canablism was linked and it is cattle byproducts fed to cattle which was banned.
