got back a few hours ago from watching sicko (and i must say: fucking brilliant!) and didn't know nixon helped create the hmo! they had a tape of him talking to....forgot who now, and the guy was telling nixon how it's a private enterprise thing and even said the beauty was it offered less care saving the company money!!!! then the next day nixon announces The Health Maintenance Organization Act of 1973 and passing it off as giving americans great quality of healthcare! what a freakin liar (no shocker, tho)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Health_Maintenance_Organization_Act_of_1973

and the guy who met w/ them was kaiser of kaiser permanente....

i also notice ppl talk about doctors being poor in countries w/ socialized medicine....but the doctor in the UK in the film drove an audi, had a million dollar home....didn't look like he was doing too bad! in fact, when moore brought it up the doctor laughed and said something like 'i guess if i wanted 3 nice cars and a 2-4million dollar home....' he kept saying he lived comfortable and how great it was helping ppl and hed hate to work for a system that cared mroe about money than the patient

i also found it interesting in the uk hospital they had a cashier...that reimbursed ppl for their travel to the hospital if they had to take a taxi or the subway or something
standin above the crowd
he had a voice that was strong and loud and
i swallowed his facade cos i'm so
eager to identify with
someone above the crowd
someone who seemed to feel the same
someone prepared to lead the way

Those parts were nice highlights in the film. I like in the UK where all they had to pay was like $6 or $10 no matter what the prescription was of how much medicine was prescribed. And the woman that got her inhaler for $5 in Cuba which cost like $120 back home.

First America needs to fix up it's health care system before it starts with this total melt down of the north American borders thing.
Progress is not made by everyone joining some new fad,
and reveling in it's loyalty. It's made by forming coalitions
over specific principles, goals, and policies.

It's situations like that which make the world a better place to live for everyone. It's like selling your best friend something for $1

Until this happens...and the military industrial complex definitely needs to take a chill pill

Haven't seen the movie...will at some point.

Health Care certainly is in dire need of some serious work. However, I think making everythign appear free (someone is always paying) is a very bad way to do it. Just wait and see how much health care costs the US if this becomes the case.

I'm sure their is some nice middle, common ground that could lead to 100% coverage of children and the availablity of coverage (affordable) to the rest.

He didn't make it out to be free. It mentioned the taxes.

yea, my husband saw it without me while i was away, and told me much the same thing...and was equally surprised!
    Stay with me...
    Let's just breathe...

I am myself like you somehow

  • And what about the child that died due to cardiac arrest because of the fever...I thought emergency rooms couldn't turn you away? It seems like some people are screwed worse by their HMOs than people with absolutely no coverage at all. On top of that, I've heard so many say how Medicaid/care patients never have any hassles, can go to any hospital, the doctors know they'll get paid without a hassle....seems like the govt in this case is doing much better than these private companies as far as customer satisfaction.

And to address the lazy, layabout point. The people who don't want to work already aren't working and living off the government.

just so everyone knows - that in each comparable - it isn't as rosy as moore makes it appear ... it still doesn't take away from the crux of the movie tho ...
