Judicial Watch: Obama ‘intended to leave no paper trail’

The president of a prominent watchdog group said Wednesday that he believes Democratic presidential frontrunner Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) “intended to leave no paper trail” during his time in the Illinois Senate.
Judicial Watch, which has been seeking access to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton’s (D-N.Y.) records from her time in the White House, argued Wednesday that the Illinois senator, who has criticized the former first lady for a lack of openness, has his own “records problem.”
“The more we learn about the Illinois Senator, the more obvious it becomes that he is anything but the ethically upright outsider he purports to be,” said Tom Fitton, the president of Judicial Watch.
The group rose to prominence when it repeatedly took on former President Bill Clinton during his time in office. It also sought records from the Bush administration regarding Vice President Dick Cheney’s energy task force.
In a statement, Fitton noted that his group has sought access to Obama’s records as a state senator and questioned whether the presidential candidate has been forthcoming with regard to what happened to those documents.
He said that “nobody knows where they are, if they exist at all” and claimed that “Obama’s story keeps changing.”
However, the Obama campaign said the senator’s records are available.
“All of Sen. Obama’s correspondence with state agencies and records of requests Obama made to them on behalf of his constituents are available to the public and have been accessed by our opponents and members of the news media,” said Obama spokesman Ben LaBolt. “Illinois State senators have limited staff – Obama did not have a scheduler – and so no detailed record exists of all of his daily activities in Springfield.”
Fitton argues that Obama’s public accounts of what happened to his records do not mesh with information from the Illinois Office of the Secretary of State. He added that the Judicial Watch investigation “suggests” that the senator could have had his records archived in a way that would grant the public access to them.
“It appears that Obama never kept records of his time in the Illinois state legislature, or he discarded them,” Fitton stated. “Either way, he clearly intended to leave no paper trail.”

hilariously ironic that they would take Obama's energy dealings to task considering the Mellon family's history in the petro department
file this under: hackery, partisan
So that makes this claim untrue how?

With no other knowledge of the subject besides what was in that article, that last quote is entirely speculation, and sorta shows what a hackjob charge this is.
There is no proof of wrongdoing, no proof of him trying to "leave no paper trail", and just a "suggestion" that this information (which we don't know ever existed) could have been archived differently, but the president of this group is using the lack of any evidence as proof that he is hiding something.

Didn't you post a thread about Hilary's records not being given over?

it's a conservative "watch-dog" organization, (awesome that they appointed themselves to look out for all of us ATTN: BILL-O) one that is backed financially by Richard Mellon Scaife who by the way endorsed Hillary just recently
They probably aren't unbiased when it comes to the presumptive Democratic nominee, especially when he's DEFEATING THE CANDIDATE RICHARD MELLON SCAIFE IS BACKING IN HIS MEDIA MOGUL STATUS.
When these trumped up charges are given the proper daylight it will be yet another dagger of untruth in the side of prudent political discussion.
Probably... but the difference here is that we know that the white house keeps a detailed schedule for the president, first lady, VP, etc.
And I am all for Barack releasing any records that he has from his state senate days, just like I am for any records that Clinton has from her days as first lady in Arkansas (if they exist), and any and all of McCain's records while a US congressman and a senator.
But when this group comes out and suggest that Obama could have archived his records differently, then in the next quote admits that there might not have been records in the first place, and then accuses him based on that contradiction that he is trying to hide something, it shows the intent of this group's "investigation".

So his records really are there and this piece is all bullshit because it's from a comservative source?

I'm not totally making this a political attack, as this group has gone after Cheney's energy task force and Abramoff's deal, I just think that this article is either a case of shoddy journalism with quotes used poorly, or the group just wants to go around making claims on speculation. Either way, it's an irresponsible way to make a legitimate request.

Criticizing the Bush administration for their guest worker program, obtaining evidence of a spike in illegal immigration denied by the administration.
Calling for Republican Tom DeLay to step down as House Majority Leader calling his actions on Medicare "inappropriate" and "unacceptable".[13]
# Judicial Watch gained media attention when a judge in a separate lawsuit ordered the Department of Justice to release live video taken from relevant security cameras at The Pentagon on September 11, 2001. On May 16, 2006 the group released the videos from the two cameras on their website with hopes to "...put to rest the conspiracy theories involving American Airlines Flight 77..."[15]
# On June 20, 2007 the group released FBI documents related to the “expeditious departure” of Saudi nationals, including members of the bin Laden family, from the United States following the 9/11 attacks. According to one of the documents, dated September 21, 2001, Osama bin Laden himself may have chartered one of the Saudi flights.[16]

this needs to be looked into, but I'm curious how many other state Senators in Illinois had someone keep tabs on how they spend their time. Are we sure this practice is common like at the federal level? If not, then this is a bs attack, if so, it's a serious issue that should be looked into.
The article itself isn't damming, cause it's no more than an accusation using a situation out of context to fit it. Show that he did something wrong by not having his time recorded and archived. As for the rest of the documents they seek, it seems to be an issue, but not yet a conspiracy by Obama and his people. They need to follow up on this stuff, and let the public know the outcome.
