Deputies ordered to halt Long benefit raffle
The New Hanover County Sheriff's Office has admonished two deputies for raffling off a Sony PlayStation 3 to raise money for former deputy Christopher Long's family.
Long was fired two weeks ago for his role in the shooting death of 18-year-old Peyton Strickland, a Cape Fear Community College student charged with beating a UNCW student and stealing two of the popular video game consoles in mid-November.
"I thought it was most inappropriate," said New Hanover County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Tom Parker. "It flies in the Strickland family's face as it would any family who's lost a loved one."
Long shot and killed Strickland on Dec. 1 as members of the sheriff's Emergency Response Team attempted to serve search and arrest warrants at Strickland's Long Leaf Acres Drive home.
A grand jury declined to indict Long on a second-degree murder charge, but District Attorney Ben David has said he would continue to pursue charges against Long when a new grand jury convenes in January.
The raffle was started by Wilmington police Sgt. Curt Stansbury and several New Hanover County deputies, Stansbury said. The purpose of the raffle was to help provide a good Christmas for Long's two children, Stansbury said. He said the raffle was not for a PlayStation 3 but rather a Panasonic 42-inch plasma TV. Stansbury, president of the Wilmington Police Officers Association, stressed that no officers or deputies sold any tickets while on duty.
Stansbury said he had sold about 18 $20 tickets so far and that anyone who purchased a ticket thinking a PlayStation 3 was the prize could get a refund.
Chief Deputy Parker discovered on Wednesday that two deputies were selling tickets for the raffle.
He threatened to fire the deputies unless they stopped, Parker said, though he wouldn't release their names.
Wilmington police Chief Ralph Evangelous said he had heard about the raffle and the PlayStation prize, but said the department itself was not involved in the raffle.
"It's flabbergasting," Evangelous said.

where did you read that...?
It awesome how quick you are to forgive the kid for beating and stealing from another person.
How about the cop? Has he been convicted of anything? Do you know what happened?
Merry Christmas.
who's forgiving? ... its just classless - he's dead ... mother has lost a child - the ps3 is a mockery to those that loved him ... i have no problem with supporting this cop - but don't try and kick dirt while someone is grieving ...
best wishes ...
Either way. if they did it outside of work I don't see how it's anyones business, they are helping out a work friends family.
the cop shot the kid in the head, through a closed door...
by the way, the kid was not convicted of anything either...and won't be...you know, 'cause he's dead....
these officers were doing something on their personal time for a friend...administration says they can't do that, in effect, saying that these officers are not allowed to have friends on their personal time.

Where did you hear that?
it was not for a ps3...and, even if it was, it's no business of the administration what their officers do in their personal for a friend...

that's your take...which is cool with me, I see it as spitting on this kids grave...
I happen to find the raffle of a PS3 in poor taste...

according to the report posted - it was a ps3 ... and i doubt it was coincidental ... again - nothing wrong with doing whatever for a friend but this is just classless ...
Ok, ok you're right.
There's your christmas present.
why is it classless? it's a hot commodity...a lot of people would want to pay 20 bucks to get a shot at it...what would have been better? i don't remember anyone knowing exactly what happened that day.
