Prince Charles says ban McDonald's food

Wed Feb 28, 3:32 AM ET

Prince Charles suggested Tuesday on a visit to the United Arab Emirates that banning McDonald's fast food was crucial for improving people's diets, a British news agency reported.

Charles made the comments while visiting the Imperial College London Diabetes Center in Abu Dhabi for the launch of a public health campaign, The Press Association reported.

"Have you got anywhere with McDonald's? Have you tried getting it banned? That's the key," Charles was quoted as asking one of the center's nutritionists.

A McDonald's spokesman, Nick Hindle, called the remark disappointing. He said other members of the royal family "have probably got a more up-to-date picture of us," alluding to reports that Charles' son, Prince Harry, was spotted eating a chicken burger at McDonald's in 2005.

"This appears to be an off-the-cuff remark, in our opinion," Hindle said. "It does not reflect our menu or where we are as a business."

The Oak Brook, Illinois-based McDonald's Corp. took steps last year to display nutrition facts on its packaging and vary its menu to counter charges that its food is unhealthy and contributes to obesity. There are 25 McDonald's franchises in the United Arab Emirates.

Charles, who is first in line to the British throne, is an active advocate of organic food and in 1986 set up a farm on his Highgrove Estate that does not use artificial pesticides or fertilizers.

The prince was in the United Arab Emirates with his wife, Camilla, as part of a tour of Gulf countries.

The United Arab Emirates has the world's second highest number of diabetes cases per capita, with more than 20 percent of those aged 20 to 79 already diagnosed with the illness, while 40 percent of the population are at risk.

I don't eat the stuff either, I think it's disgusting, but banning is going too far.

I'm all in favor of people being allowed to kill themselves in whatever way they see fit, be it drugs, cigarettes, or McDonald's. It's your life.

If they wanted to make McDonald's an 18-and-over establishment, I'd have a hard time thinking of a reason why they shouldn't, other than difficulties with enforcement.

I gave it up for a new years resolution...so after 6 months or so, I figured I'd get a burger, I was hungry and it was an option at the time...

I swear, after three bits, I was sick as a dog...now I can't even smell the stuff...

So, you want to take away their largest market (under 18....way under 18). That, in effect, would be almost like a ban.

This is not a defense of McDonald's btw.

I'm really not serious, I know that it would be totally impractical and unenforceable, and that even if it were practical it would never happen because millions of lazy parents would take to the streets if they actually had to cook real food for their kids instead of stopping for Happy Meals on the way home.

But, if I were serious, I wouldn't be concerning myself with their market, any more than we concerned ourselves with the market of the tobacco companies when we banned their advertising. That's their problem, I don't care about their market. I don't see any problem, in theory, with protecting kids from things that are very bad for them and offer little or no benefit. It'll never happen, I know, but if I could wave my magic wand and make it happen, I would.

McDonald's is just what the doctor ordered for hangover relief. I can't imagine it going away any time soon. I live in a rural area here in southern Illinois and a ton of these little towns have McDonald's as one of maybe two or three fast food joints. It's tough to get away from the place. Sure, it's greasy and not good for you but I can't imagine that any other fast food place is any healthier. McDonald's seems to be catching a lot of flack because of its large amount of stores. Well, maybe that and the fact it really goes after kids with a clown mascot, slides and ball pits and the Happy Meal.

Even the one in my tiny little town stays open 24 hours....so they've got the munchies crowd cornered. I, personally, can't stand the place. Their food just smells funny. But when I was a kid, I used to love dipping their chicken nuggets in honey. :p

In the city where I study there are several fast food places that serve healthy food. It's just as cheap and it tastes much much better. And you don't feel you've just eaten a hairball rolled in grease.

I miss salad bars. Nobody has salad bars anymore. Wendy's used to have a pretty good one. Now the only place that I know of around here is the Old Country Buffet.

I hate mcdonalds. I really believe they are (partly) responsible for making an entire generation of people fat.

I do, however, have to give them credit when credit is due. their new salads and fruit pack is very healthy. that is a step in the right direction.

We don't even have an Old Country Buffet here anymore. We have this place called Ryans. It's a huge chain down here and it's disgusting. Blegh!

I used to go to Wendy's for salads all the time. Then when they took the salad bar out, they had those rolled pita sanwiches, those things were AWESOME! Now there's no decent fast food anywhere.

What the hell is up with the premade salads at the fast food joints? What the hell is that taste? Is that preservatives? BLECH!!!

Yeah, I think it's something they spray on the greens to keep the looking fresh. I never trust those. There's really no fast options anywhere. Whole Foods salad bar is a bit pricey.
