a coworker just sent this to me, i don't know how legit it is, but it's interesting and includes all the pres candidates:

i had no idea about this--holy shit:

Anti-abortion flip-flop

Kucinich amassed one of the most stringent anti-abortion voting records during his time in Congress, but then changed his position when he began running for the presidency in 2003. Kucinich's record includes votes in favor of the "gag rule" which cuts off family planning aid to foreign countries and the Unborn Victims of Violence Act. He has voted against budget initiatives funding research into the abortion drug RU-486 and against healthcare coverage of contraception for federal employees. As The Nation put it in a 2002 profile, "In his two terms in Congress, he has quietly amassed an anti-choice voting record of Henry Hyde-like proportions." Kucinich's anti-choice record earned him a 95 percent from the National Right to Life Committee.

Yet when Kucinich launched his presidential campaign in 2003, he vowed to support a woman's right to choose and even told a crowd in Iowa that "as president, I would protect that right [to abortion], and I would also make sure that appointees to the Supreme Court protected that right."

  • I'm not voting on the abortion issue alone and since he seems pro choice now anyways, it's less of a reason for me to be concerned. I'll look into this further though, it's quite interesting. I'd like to hear his thoughts on it.

This, unfortunately, is all true. His flip-flop was the top of the news here for weeks on end. As I recall, he also supported some downright draconian anti-drug measures back in the day.

  • Kucinich paused when asked if he always supported Roe vs. Wade. Then he said: "My voting record would probably reflect that I haven't, but I'm also saying that I have evolved on this issue."

Kucinich dismissed notions that his change of position resulted from his decision to seek the Democratic presidential nomination. "This isn't a decision that I just made. I didn't just walk into an auditorium in Iowa and see three people holding placards and suddenly announce a position. I have been struggling with this very complex issue for some time."

but how do you know he's just not playing politics? and i'm not trying to just call kucinich out here, but in general, when do we vote on a person's record and when do we vote on what they say? like with this, he may be 'pro-choice' now, but he has a terrible voting record. so then what?

every voter has their priorities with issues, and every candidate isn't perfect. i guess everyone just has to try and prioritize and trust someone.

His stance now has changed and I believe him to be an honest person who has always stood by his beliefs even in the face of ridicule such as being a vegan or strongly anti war. He is a VERY spiritual person and I can understand him struggling with this issue. Furthermore, we've had Bush for two terms and Roe Vs Wade is still in place so it's safe to say I'm not worried about this issue. And I'm glad he'd decided to look deeper into the issue and have a change of heart.

Choices concerning my health care. Choices concerning my money. Choices concerning my exchanges within this country and with other countries. Choices concerning my retirement. Choices concerning educating my children, if I choose to have them. The list is quite long and is directly linked to all the behaviors Kucinich would force upon me via law.

and what candidates would be more likely to give you those choices?

he can say he supports the upholding of roe, but that is not nearly the whole issue--that's just federal abortion legality under certain terms. there are things like the gag rule and the Unborn Victims of Violence Act (which kucinich supported), and parental consent laws, crossing the state line issues, medical abortion issues, and FACE laws, and OTC ECs, and insurance coverage for OCPs, etc. all these issues that chip away at our reproductive freedoms that are all outside of Roe and all things that our lawmakers have their hands in. so many things have happened under bush (and some that kucinich supported) that have done wonders to undermine repro freedoms. these are smart people--they know they don't have to overturn roe, they can just do all of these other things to pretty much make it nonexistent.

if that's your guy, go for it, but i'm just saying that roe isn't everything.

None of them would be as anti-choice as Kucinich. Ron Paul, in particular, would be the most pro-choice. He proposes forcing my hand in none of those areas. He's even against a federal ban on abortion.

As I've said, his opinion has evolved on this issue. I've always been weary of supporting late term abortion myself.
