SAN FRANCISCO (Aug. 11) - Cindy Sheehan, an icon of the anti-war movement, has qualified to challenge House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for her seat in Congress.
Sheehan, 51, says Pelosi failed to persuade her party to end funding for the Iraq war after Democrats reclaimed the House majority in the 2006 midterm elections. She also accused the speaker of failing to hold the administration accountable for the administration's warrantless wiretapping program.
Sheehan, who lost her son in the war, is best known for beginning a vigil outside Pr
esident Bush's Texas ranch in August 2005.
"I feel like Nancy Pelosi, as the Democratic leader, has failed our country miserably, funding for more war," Sheehan said Monday. "The speaker's failed to hold George Bush and Dick Cheney accountable."
San Francisco election officials on Monday said Sheehan turned in 214 more valid signatures than the 10,198 she needed to qualify for the November ballot as an independent candidate for the 8th Congressional District seat.
The speaker welcomes the challenge, said Pelosi spokesman Drew Hammill.
"The speaker has the highest respect for Cindy Sheehan. Ms. Sheehan lost her son in the Iraq war and has the right - as every American has - to run for office," Hammill said in a statement.
Pelosi, 67 and in her 11th term, has said she is disappointed that Democrats have not been able to stop the war in Iraq. Last year, the House passed legislation giving Bush $70 billion for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan with no deadlines for troop withdrawal.
Pelosi won her 2006 campaign with 80 percent of the vote. Sheehan also will be at a distinct financial disadvantage as she takes on one of the most powerful politicians in the country.
She said her campaign has collected more than $300,000, compared with nearly $2.4 million collected by Pelosi through the end of June.
The other candidate on the ballot for the 8th district seat is Republican Dana Walsh.

SIN EATERS--We take the moral excrement we find in this equation and we bury it down deep inside of us so that the rest of our case can stay pure. That is the job. We are morally indefensible and absolutely necessary.

You think Cindy Sheehan would be an improvement! I think Pelosi has failed miserably but this will not be the answer.

Perhaps not, but who else is challenging the Democrats on their war complacency? If no "legit" candidates will do more than say the same ol' shit, then I guess it takes some "Crazy" person.
Good for her.
contrary to popular belief, being a senator is not a difficult job.
Besides one person can't get us out of this war, it will take the full support of Congress and John McCain to not win the election before we can even start the withdrawal process. And besides withdrawing 100% now would be very careless.
It's not guaranteed that Iraq will revert back to full out war once we leave the region but it's a strong possibility. Iraq needs to get there own army operational before we can leave the region imo.
So thanks to Georgie Boy and Cheney we will need to be there at least one more year.
And yes I think that sucks!

Its not like Sheehan could get anything done in congress, other than making the dems sweat a little. she literally couldnt be more inneffective than Sheehan, and she wouldnt be another lobbyist-funded career politican (for awhile), so i dont see what the problem is with her winning.
Sheehan (if she were to run and win) would not be Speaker of the House. The "honor" would simply go to another high-ranking member of the House, ie, more status quo.
I do think Sheehan is a fucking whack job, though, and I mean that with all due respect.
for the least they could possibly do

definitely....no contest...
All you have to be able to do is more or less wake up, sit in the chair, and be an honest human being with good intentions. Tough job..
Pelosi undeniably fails this test on the honesty part...and most politicians fail as well for that matter.

Why not? There's no possible way Cindy Sheehan could do *less* than Pelosi has done.
Not many people gave Carolyn McCarthy a shot in NY when she ran as the widow of one of Colin Ferguson's victims in the train massacre- and yet she's been in Congress since 1997.
Just sayin.
Except Kucinich. He is, and forever will be, the man.
