WASHINGTON (July 15) - The American flag has many labels: Stars and stripes. Old Glory. And sometimes, made in China.

Congress can't halt the flow of Chinese-made flags, but lawmakers can try to control where they are flown. The House declared Monday that any flag flown on federal property should be made in the U.S.A.

It's not a major problem facing the nation," admitted Rep. Bob Filner, D-Calif. "But it's an irritant."

Congress declared in a non-binding resolution passed Monday that any flag flown on federal property -- like post offices and courthouses -- should be made in the U.S.A. Only U.S.-made flags fly over the nation's Capitol.

--[Oh great, new jobs for those laid off flight attendants.]

Some state governments have weighed in on the issue. In Minnesota, for example, all flags sold in the state must be made in the U.S. Violators are subject to a fine of up to $1,000 and jail time of up to 90 days.

--[There goes that extra fishing trip.]

U.S. flags made in China started popping up everywhere in the days and weeks after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks. American manufacturers couldn't keep up with the demand, and the market value for the foreign import of flags surged from $1 million a year to nearly $52 million.

It's not just the government - several retail chains have decided to buy American-made flags. LIBERMAN's company sells flags to Ace Hardware, Target and Lowe's. But he's had trouble selling flags to some retailers.

--[Damn it, I thought it was about pride, its all about the money.]
=======

Next important matter before Congress, all those damn imported "Support the Troops" stickers.

SIN EATERS--We take the moral excrement we find in this equation and we bury it down deep inside of us so that the rest of our case can stay pure. That is the job. We are morally indefensible and absolutely necessary.

    Can't we just get rid of non-binding resolutions all together???

    Seriously, think how many staffers' hours were used up, and how many reams of paper wasted, and Congressional floor time lost because of non-binding resolutions over the years.

    I actually give this idea a thumbs up. Sometimes, symbolism counts.

    Actions speak louder than words. Making flags in the country is a nice gesture. The flag is a mere symbol - it only represents what we believe of it. It'd be nice to have the flag represent the ideals the nation was founded upon and have others outside the nation (and many inside) feel we were following those pursuits, but I guess for now a small, insignifcant symbol is all we can muster.

    Huh?

    I'm just saying the flag that flies over the U.S. capitol should be made in America.

    But the point is, who cares, everything else isn't. What is a a mere, insignificant symbol if the meaning isn't true?
