I'd like to hear how you feel about a missile defense shield. If it's to protect you from an attack from Iran, why not put this shield in Israel or Turkey or UAE or Saudi Arabia?

As Americans
-we have not had bombs dropped on our country.
-we have not had to worry about unexploded landmines
-we have not had to worry about an invasive land war on our soil
-we have not had to worry about our country being splittered into sects.

I asked myself if the world was ready for the following but realized, even saying "world" still means it's not in my backyard.

-Another Cold War with Russia?
-Russian missiles pointed at Europe?
-A missile defense shield in former USSR breakaway countries?
-Nuclear technology in countries who so far have not been able to control their own black market weapons?
SIN EATERS--We take the moral excrement we find in this equation and we bury it down deep inside of us so that the rest of our case can stay pure. That is the job. We are morally indefensible and absolutely necessary.

I just thank God for giving us america, i mean what would the World be like without it?

Wheres the harm? as far as i understand it the missiles used in the shield have no war-heads right? they're just like big bullets that slam into nasty "red" missiles ye? So thats harmless, theres no way war-heads could be attached to these harmless "bullets" and turn them into an offensive weapon, therefore there can be no threat of further expanionism
I'm beyond anything but sarcasm about the whole thing.

I think it desperately sucks. I like my lifestyle, I like where I live and I have hope that I can at least give back some of my wealth to help unwealthy others. And I would like to do that in peace. But there we have 3 of the biggest immature idiots playing with the whole world's safety. Not just there lives mind you, or at worse there own country, no the whole world. And for what exactly? I don't want Iran to have nukes, I don't want the US to put arms attracting shields everywhere and I would like the megalomaniac russian to take diplomatic lessons.
And while we're in the middle looking at these 3 playing with words, arms and money like 14 year olds there's nothing we can say to just get them to shut up already. I hope one day some people will realise they can only claim proprety on their own lives.
So basically I think it's a bad idea. It took long enough to find a moderate equilibrium in the nuclear field, let's not do worse than things already are.

The way I see it is there is only one real reason to have a missile shield and that's to be able to engage in nuclear war. If we think a shield protects us then what will stop us from going too far with nuking people?

However I also wonder if the US is the only country with a shield will it bully other countries even more? If the US engages in nuclear war with a country, will that country nuke the unprotected allied countries to get back at the US?

The whole thing just scares me. And I'm not even sure if the freakin thing will work properly if the first place.

I don't want Russia pointing nukes at European countries or the US as they already are, but I also wish the US didn't have nukes pointing at Russia either. If this all happened before Bush became President I probably would have wanted the shield in the US but I've learned what it's like to have an untrustworthy, war happy President who has already gone way too far.

Nukes, shield and crazy President or leader will just lead to disaster.

Isn't it great that Bush has decided to help us poor defenceless Europeans against the inevitable attacks from Iran
Seriously, which European countries are currently under threat from Iran? That's right -none. now, because of Americas actions, how many European countries will be under threat from Russia?

-we have not had to worry about our country being splittered into sects - there are some minority groups still at work in some parts, but the Balkan countries and former Soviet countries are well on their way to becoming fully democratic states. The majority are already there.

We do not have to set up missile defences either. If Bush wants to protect America, that's fine - He can line New York and California with a missile shield. I think we're ok over here as far as protection goes.

US rejects German G8 climate goal

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/6725801.stm

Washington says it will not agree to climate change targets ahead of a G8 summit in Germany already marred by a row over US missile defence plans.

Rejecting proposals to slash emissions, a top US climate official said the G8 should not dictate members' policies.

Washington's row with Moscow over US plans for a shield in two former Soviet satellites continues to loom large.

And tensions are also mounting outside the summit area, where police are using water cannon to disperse protesters.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, hosting the summit, has set what is seen as an ambitious personal goal of persuading the leading industrialised countries to commit to cutting emissions by 50% by 2050.

She also wants them to increase fuel efficiency by 20% and limit the world's temperature rise to 2C.

However, President George W Bush's senior climate adviser said on Wednesday that a number of countries - including the US - would not sign up to those commitments.

James Connaughton insisted that there had been significant progress and consensus on the issue of climate change. But he made clear the US did not believe the G8 should be the forum for setting targets.

"There is significant agreement that those should be established on a national basis, and the only area of disagreement is that the G8 should dictate the national policies of its members," he said.

Mrs Merkel is using the hours before the summit opens to meet the leaders of the Group of Eight club individually.

Speaking ahead of his meeting, Mr Bush said that instead of backing the proposed emissions caps he favoured his own plan that the worst CO2 emitting nations, including the US, China and India, meet before the year is out to put together a new long-term strategy to tackle the problem.

"The United States can serve as a bridge to help find a solution," Mr Bush said.

BBC diplomatic correspondent James Robbins says meetings of the world's most powerful leaders are always difficult, but this one looks especially tough. Mrs Merkel is going to have to decide how far the most contentious issues can be pushed.

She is operating against a backdrop of increasingly fractious relations between some of the G8 members.

Mr Bush and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, have been trading threats and accusations ahead of the meeting, sparked by Washington's plans to build a missile defence shield.

The Czech Republic is the planned site for a radar base, while interceptor missiles are due to be deployed in Poland.

Mr Bush, who is expected to meet Mr Putin on the sidelines of the summit, insists that the new system is a "purely defensive measure, aimed not at Russia but at true threats".

However, Mr Putin has scoffed at US claims that the shield is designed to counter threats from states such as North Korea and Iran, and warned that if the US pressed ahead with its plans, Russia would target its weapons at Europe.

On Wednesday Mr Bush dismissed the warning, saying "Russia is not going to attack Europe".

"Russia is not an enemy," he said. "There needs to be no military response because we're not at war with Russia. Russia is not a threat."

UK Prime Minister Tony Blair entered the debate in a BBC interview on Wednesday, saying it was not in Russia's interest to have a "scratchy" relationship with Western countries.

He vowed a "frank discussion" with Mr Putin about his warning.

Tensions are equally high outside the summit where several hundred anti-globalisation protesters have gathered near the fence protecting the building where the leaders of the eight top industrialised nations are due to meet.

Others are trying to block the roads from the airport, where several delegations have yet to land.

Police are also said to be using tear gas, but there have not been reports of any arrests or injuries.

Some 16,000 officers have been deployed to deal with what are currently estimated to be around 6,000 protesters.

The police are keen to avoid the disturbances seen last weekend in the city of Rostock, where protests turned violent and some 1,000 people were injured.
