Northwest Art Cartel, a trade association of artists, is pleased to announce an exhibition of contemporary artwork at the Washington State Convention & Trade Center in Seattle, opening October 4, 2007. Opening reception October 6, 4-6 p.m.

Syndicalism is co-curated by Deborah Lawrence and artist Alice Dubiel. They convened a group of 15 socially engaged artists (The Northwest Art Cartel) from Washington and Oregon to contribute work which explores the concept of cooperation through a variety of media, including painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, collage, artists’ books, fiber, print media, installation, and sculpture.

Syndicalism explores the notion that in times of stress, humans bond together in groups to cooperate and care for one another. The impulse to “tend and befriend” presents an alternative to “fight or flight,” which has commonly been considered the natural human response to anxiety and conflict. 70 new artworks by the Northwest’s most engaged artists invite the audience to consider and reflect on societal themes that affect everybody.
