Hmmm.. I wonder if it would be the hardcore or "elitist" fans as she puts it, or the casual fan who has only heard Even Flow and the like that would yell out for it at an Ed solo show. Seems like quite an assumption to make and not very professional. I don't like taking a bad rap as a PJ/ED fan because SOMEONE in the crowd called out for a song that would obviously not be played.

    rant over.

I thought about the same thing when I read it...
The type of guy yelling EVENFLOW or JEREMY at a show like that would scream casual fan to me....

sorry pal, you're just wrong. this is how the MAJORITY of fans act at, not only Ed solo shows, but at PJ shows in general. plus, they're usually drunk.

personally, I cant want til we all get old (read: mature) and we can just sit and enjoy the music.

I've hung out and toured with a lot of fans and never experienced what you are describing.. but then again, my crowd are the mellow pot smokers.. and we ask if the people next to us mind if we smoke, believe it or not.

  • I was just wondering when people smoking weed at a concert became such a terrible thing. Judging by what I have read on here it seems to really offend many people.

I wanna be next to you :)

The article was the same rant that many people here had - but I have to agree that the drunk dumbasses yelling out at shows are more likely the casual fan. It's too bad...the Ed shows that I went to (Vacouver) would have been so much better w/o the shoutouts, flashes, etc.

well, I have no problem with anyone smoking whatever they want BEFORE the shows.
but if I wanted to stink of smoke, I'd smoke myself (and I'm talking about ciggies too there).

...or at least pass the joint around ;)

anyone who has seen Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds accoustic tours knows this is not a unique issue which PJ fans alone possess..

Take any touring act and put them in a accoustic venue and you will get "yahoos" screaming something out..

The press should stop trying to paint PJ fans with such a broad brush.. Its elitism at its worst (ugh! pesky Pearl Jam fans)

I have seen or heard these same "incidents' occurring with any of the following solo / accoustic acts in venues..
Are ALL their fans rude as well?:

    1) Chris Cornell
    2) Bruce Springsteen
    3) Aaron Lewis
    4) Elvis Costello
    5) Pete Townsend
    6) Sting
    7) Heart
    8) Aerosmith
    9) Joe Strummer
    10)Counting Crows
    11) Jimmy Buffett
    12) The Tragically Hip

Even Aaron got mad at this one chick that was up front talking and talking he told her to shut up too!!!!! want a mess.......
some people just suck its cool to have fun, but let the artist do his thing.
Just because you bought a ticket doesn't mean you are running the show or set list..

It's the state of the world today.

Most people's attention spans are so fucking short that they can't just sit down and focus on the music.

And, for some reason meatheads think it's cool to get hammered before/during a show and make an ass of themselves.

And, of course, there's an incessant need for people to have their voices heard by as many people as possible. Why, I don't know, but this has happened at almost EVERY quiet/acoustic show I have been to. Jeff Tweedy basically had to tell people to shut the fuck up or leave when I saw him a few years ago. When I saw Travis, the lead singer tried to pull a truly unplugged trick by playing his acoustic guitar without ANY plugs whatsoever (just as you might see someone in the street doing). Would have worked if a couple shitheads would have been able to resist the opportunity to let everyone know that they were in the room.

I don't think anyone can tie this type of behavior in to casual OR "hardcore" PJ fans. It's people in general -- some casual fans, some hardcore, some somewhere in the middle. Let's not fool ourselves into thinking that only "casual" fans would behave that way at a show, or that ALL casual fans are like that. Some are, some aren't, which can also be said for Fan Club members and message pitters.

  • I am guessing Carrie Brownstein knows most of you?
I have been very annoyed at you so called die hard fans. To where through canada in 2005 I'd sit in hotel till showtime have a few drinks and goto the venue. Having this nice 3 year break I am hoping to go back and see you all more appreciative of Bubba and his obese wife on the lawn dancing to Jeremy after vomiting in a trash can. He is just as good as you "wash" people.

    quoting Carrie

"The fans might not change your love for the bands themselves, but the way fandom of certain artists manifests itself can seem less like an innocuous gathering of like-minded people and more like an elitist, annoying tribe," she wrote.

  • Just so you fans know that artists and fans alike take notice of your writing down set lists. Be upset that the guy next to you is drunk etc etc.
The more casual fan is definately the better one to be around on show day. Not some idiot writing a set list that will be posted on here what an hour after the show? and the hand held recordings? I remember people getting mad they were recoding and the people near them had the audacity to cheer and yell! Oh how could they! LOL
who listens to the badly recorded boots anyway.

and shhh. I didnt even get Eds solo album. Havent heard it yet
If he is gonna be doing pre set acoustic songs I suppose I will have to get it to familarize myself with the songs. I am a Pearl Jam fan though. And basicly a save you/ even flow type. Although footsteps and release and ledbetter are a holy experience for me.
