My visit to the Old State Mental hospital (pictures)

This weekend I took a trip to Traverse City and went to the old Traverse City State Mental hospital. It has been closed down for many years, but the buildings still stand. It was eerie. We walked up to a door in one of the buildings and there was a cold air rushing out of it (about 40 degrees cooler than the air outside.) There is probably an explanation for it...but it was creepy. Here is a link to the pictures that I took.

If I knew where it was I would take you there. There's much more than this

  • The bars on the windows are intense...

Places like that scare the shit out of me, I think about the state of mind people were in and the caregivers that really didn't understand as much as we do now.

Nice shots, there is one in particular I really like, it's of the gate with the building in the background. The green patina on the metal is really beautiful.

    Those places scare me too.

I imagine that there was cruelty as well as chaos in a place like that.

  • Thank you for your comments. This place has really stuck with me. It was built in 1885. I am not sure how much I believe in ghosts, but there was definitely a presence that could be felt there. It was scary..but, mostly calm and sad. The creepiest thing is that I can zoom in on two of the pictures on a different program and it looks like there are people in the windows. Probably shadows, but weird.

Seriously though, nice pics. Places like that have always fascinated me in some creepy way.

This website has abandoned and/or creepy pics listed by state. I got a couple sets in there myself, in the Massachusetts one.
