I would love it i've every one would post at least one self portrait of yourself, whether you are any good at art or not. It could be a scribble if scribbling is all you feel comfortable doing...just something a bout more and a bit more original than a smiley face :) <---example :D

I'll start, but please jion in. it's just a bit of fun...

  • Nice portraits pacifier .. I like the different ways you see yourself. I wonder what a psychologist would make of the third one with no nose .. That's my favourite :D

Quarterpast .. very arty, that'd look good made into a painting don't you think? Have you tried getting the mirror image and putting the two halves together .. then try it with the other side of your face. It's great fun :D

I've never done a self portrait, not even a quick sketch. It's like listening to myself sing, just can't do it .. I've painted a few portraits of other people though, but I don't really enjoy doing them :)

thanks, I don't know that any actually look like me, I'm not very good at drawing people exactly as they look. The first scribbley pen sketch was from looking in the mirror, the second was from a photo and the third was from my head obviously :) and obviously it looks least like me, but it seemed to sum up how I was feeling, so I'm glad you like it. Actually that style was inspired by Joy Hester.

Oh, just to let people know, there were a group of artist known as the angry penguins in the '20s. They were all pretty good, but my favourite was Albert Tucker, followed by his former wife Joy Hester. Alsothere's a guy called Arthor Boyd, but I actually prefer his brother's work (David Boyd). Incase anyone wants to have a look see.

you don't even feel like having a little try? Hey? just a little one. consider it like kareoke night, we're all getting up on stage and having a go, just for the fun of it. Have a few drinks if you need to work up the "courage", although it's normally obvious when people have had a few drinks on kareoke night :) By the way, I've never done Kareoke, but that's not the point :)

Thanks for sharing quaterpast. At least some one is having a go :) I really like yours by the way. Photograghy is not my thing, I don't understand how to make a perfect replica of what I see infront of me into art. But obviously you do. Maybe I'm just not very creative.
  • good thread pacifier, I like your first sp, the blue ink one the best, but I like the other two differently as well. quaterpast, although digital art is not really my thing, I do find your sp interesting in its composition and the abstraction. These are from when I was younger but I still look the same just older, that's all.... i put some colour on the second one just cos I could.... maybe I could get into digital art.....

Thanks for the comments and thanks for contributuing, burtschips. I think I like your third one the best, but they are all pretty cool. You really remind me of someone, I can't think who, then again everyone seems to remind me of somebody else (my friends tease me about it all the time :))

  • rapscallionyouth, No 2 is disturbing (I assume this was intended). No 1 is interesting certainly, No 3 i feel works well as I find the photoshop treatment enhances the mood and the expression. Thanks.

Thanks pearlwax, I draw as art seldomly at this time, usually it is in connection with poetry/ written posts by others or sometimes sketches of places for memory. I used to draw a lot but then I got distracted, I think I'll get back into it as I get older.

Let me know if you think of my double, pacifier... I have some other portraits just difficult to get to a scanner. I hope your thread entices more to give us an impression.

Thanks for joining in. Now we're starting to get a bit of momentum on this thread. Can't wait to see more people have a go.

I think I like your 3rd on the best. It looks more simple than the other two, but really quite effective I think. I really like it.

thanks for joining in. I must admit mine are a little out of date too, by about 2-5 years, but 12 years!! a lot can change in that time. I would love to see an updated version :)

wow...all of your portraits are really amazing! I really enjoyed looking at them!

here is one I did back in 2003, it is acrylics on canvas, the pic of it isn't so great, my digital camera isn't working so i took a pic of it with my web cam...

lol! i can't remember exactly when the photo that i sketched it from was taken... i might have been 18... but i know for sure I was in high school.... it was drawn at that time too, and has been lingering in my sketchbook for the last decade!

i was actually trying to do a portrait of me and my sister together (that's why i'm leaning in to the right) ....
I turned out ok, but my sketch of her was terrible! so i cut her out. ;)

I will go with Hippie's confirmation that this still looks like me... (thanks hon - you're very sweet!)

This one was done last year. It's pastel.
I'm content with it, but my one critique is my oversized eyes. I was wearing glasses while drawing, but didn't include them in the actual drawing, so they are out of proportion. Other than that, and my elongated features, it's a fair representation ;)
Who here isn't their own worst critic?

  • nice thread everyone. some great posts and portraits. i'm a fan in particular of burtschips' portraits. i think someone else asked you if you do comic book illustrations as well. hopefully you don't mind me saying so, but your drawings remind me of very well illustrated comics. really great detail! nice work!

just something i whipped up in photoshop, tried to make it look like a painting.

I can see the painting idea. It's very colourful. You should have a go at making a real painting of it :) Thanks for sharing.

well i no longer have a scanner, so i can't post any of my old drawings...besides the fact, i haven't *drawn* a self-portrait since high school. haha. anyway, my personal focus is photography in any case and although i really don't *do* too many self-portraits, i'd never post something recent in any case. :p that said, i am more than willing to share a really old one, one that i did when i first started grad school. i actually quite liked it, as did my prof...and given it's age, it doesn't even really look like me anymore so i don't mind putting it out there. :D

    btw - i am a non-smoker almost two years now. :o

That's an interesting photo. Thanks for sharing.

    PS Congratulations on the non-smoking.
