I can’t smile today
I’m trying to figure out why
A mother would beat her child
When did children become outlets for our
frustrations?
Instead of gifts of love and pride

I can’t smile today
I just heard another rumor
Fade into past lies
My back is scared from too many ignorant
minds
Who have enough time to find a knife
But not able to understand what is right

I can’t smile today
I took my boy to the park
To swing, to slide, to laugh
Instead I had to explain why the chains were
broke
And the slides were covered with garbage
I couldn’t hold him as he cried
Because my hands were hiding the obscenities

I can’t smile today
No one else seems to care
They’ve sold their soul for 60” televisions
Dropped their children in front of Sony
They brag about how good of a person they
are
As they cut off a pedestrian trying to cross
the street

I can’t smile today
Cause I didn’t smile yesterday
And I don’t see a reason to tomorrow

This is my first post on this board, btw; I must say, I love what you all are doing. I have done many a drawing (quite a few of them pearl jam related) and written many a poem, but I've never taken the time to get them up on the internet....
