What do you do for inspiration?

Of course I am sure most of us grab the nearest Pearl Jam cd and let the creative juices flow but what else inspires you to create?

For me a good solid depression always gives way to some interesting sketches.

Depends on what I'm creating at that moment

Sadness helps me a lot when writing poetry...also photography, as I go out for long walks with my camera then and think about stuff :)

Happiness/drunkenness helps when I'm designing stuff (websites, flyers...)

And then there's that undescribable feeling I get from surfing, it helps me when I surf (surfing is to an art, I tells ya!!! :D)

    funny, i'm similar,
i was quite unhappy about life for a few months, and wrote tons of poetry, would get up in the middle of the night and write.
i find turning pj OFF helps me create, it's hard to write when i have perfection playing. although most music inspires me to play (i play flute, so i'll 'jam' (you don't want to hear it, it's terrible), along with music). happinness inspires my music
drunkenness helps with some things, such as writting, but if i'm sloshed, the poetry/writting comes out terrible. however at the end of last semester when i had terrible writters block i had a few beers and that helped me start writing my economics paper (what! economics neede inspiration?! i'm a scientist, and used to a fairly rigid format, i had trouble with the open format), i was pretty much buzzed for the writting of the entire paper, and just got it back with the comment 'this is a very interesting paper, nice topic'
just seeing something that strikes you, for me the most recent were a woman waiting for the bus, she was obviously strung out, particularly beautiful post-storm sunlight illuminating a particularly beautiful boy, and a street kid nodding off outside a mcd's
just keep yourself open, notice the stuff around you.
my mom's a painter/sculpter, and about 23 or so years ago got inspired by canada's wilderness, particularly rocks/cliffs, and has been painting them ever since, when i was a teenager i found out that she actually used to paint other stuff and i was surprised. sometimes inspiration hits, from the wierdest places and sticks.
as the dead said "inspiration move me brightly"
    and sorry for the ramblings

also, what i'm reading inspires my behaviour which can lead to creativity. i'm into the whole beat literature, and reading ginsberg and burroughs made me see things that most ppl think are ugly as beautiful, and to not care what others think of you, and that leads to wonderful things :)

Depression can be good, but I think it's more about being in a chaotic state where you can let you subconscious sort of dictate your creativity. It's a place where you're almost lost, but somewhat aware.
  • I've been with Paul, my husband of 6mos) for about two years now and I've been really happy...so I haven't been painting at all. I am trying really hard to find a different source of inspiration, instead of depression, hurt, and anger. I wonderful studio that I am trying so hard to use. I get the urge to go upstairs and paint and then I just end up staring at the canvas for what seems to be an eternity with nothing much comming out of me. UG!
