sitting in the corner @ the coffee shop

sometimes i think, why not just go up to these people and find who they really are.

but, that's not me, so i just reinvent their lives on paper.

I am an old man
rooted in my ways
I’m thankful for the good times
I put up with the pain

and here I am alone now
but I’m hopeful of a change
I can smell it in the roses
growing ‘round her grave

my friends have all been faithful
my enemies were true
I’ve made an honest living
these fingers bare the proof

my little girl’s all grown now
she’s a lawyer in Detroit
but she calls every Sunday
and heals me with her voice

Nancy was a good wife
the strong and silent type
but she always saved a good word
for the calming fire light

and though she’s passed on now
I am sure we’ll meet again
she’ll be waiting with a coffee
when my journey finally ends
