this flag has waved and waved goodbye
eye-red, lie-white, skin-blue
breathe the gnats, bite your tongue
wish well the saviors
not-for-prophet but good will
always triumph
i believe finally in the sailors who sweated
scrubbing the decks for free
and coming home
to less

  • a poet leaves puddles near the eyes
    of a sailor's two sons
    one: a prophet
    the other: a pugilist
    both: disgruntled
    and said poet leaves
his footprints on the forgotten face
    of the derelict beaches
    of the barrier islands
    that dot the shore
    unconnected
    like biege and green eyes
near the edges of puddles . . .
