it began in time, a wind so red
that my lips were painted instead of chapped
the audience clapped, we held our ears
together, we took over each castle
jumped each rope we used to noose each nemesis
of the sky-turned-window-turned-turning point
of each airborn disaster
we've accumulated over the years
the following:
a following, feathers, pieces blown to bits and pieces of puzzle
that never existed
before we cut our losses, we clearly marked each exit
as a place to fear
we rode into each village without wasting fuel
just let the wheels do their best down each hill
praying for momentum in hands held
out to the needy, this one goes
count to ten, take a deep breath, abandon all hope
it's like this again and again
a gain and a loss and a loophole
we never let go of the past but we do let go of each other's hands
