the day we die

and so it's after the fact
that it sinks in
into our heads
and into our skin sinking into mattresses
alone by windows
letting sunlight in
and making us feel more alone
than we've ever been
like children tugging on mothers' sleeves
eyes losing sight of innocence
look up to see
what really happens when our hearts
and hands grow old and crack
and hair goes gray and eyes tint yellow
if we make it that far
but you see, my friends
one day it will be the end
and i'd like you all by my bedside
smiling and wishing i'd stay
but knowing i can't
and understanding why
because life is too short to spend knowing
that we've spent our whole lives dying
we spend our whole lives dying
that it sinks in
into our heads
and into our skin sinking into mattresses
alone by windows
letting sunlight in
and making us feel more alone
than we've ever been
like children tugging on mothers' sleeves
eyes losing sight of innocence
look up to see
what really happens when our hearts
and hands grow old and crack
and hair goes gray and eyes tint yellow
if we make it that far
but you see, my friends
one day it will be the end
and i'd like you all by my bedside
smiling and wishing i'd stay
but knowing i can't
and understanding why
because life is too short to spend knowing
that we've spent our whole lives dying
we spend our whole lives dying

many great lines in this
nicely done
vivid
"Hear me, my chiefs!
I am tired; my heart is
sick and sad. From where
the sun stands I will fight
no more forever."
Chief Joseph - Nez Perce
