what scripture told me was metaphor-laced and outdated
i sat alone in the parking lot, angry, welding shut your car doors in my mind
in one hand: a toothbrush
in the other: soap
i was ready to clean the graffiti off the walls
of the last of the old bars in margate
one block from the bay
a ticking timebomb of timeless and priceless heirlooms
crabs snapping at bystanders just to look menacing
the corpse of a seagull, the moon in half
why did i even come out to see you?
why'd i write your name on my napkin
with the pen i forgot to take out of my pocket?
play your favorite song on the jukebox
and whistle along
my head will be shaking in tune with the recent earthquakes of the far east
killing any doubting voices that dwell in my skull
i'm biting through toothpicks
picking my shots and taking them
it's getting worse
