abandon what you've left behind

dear victoria,

as any dull
cacti or porcupines
might point out
us drifting on thinning ice
with weak knees
knocking on doors
until morning answers

you will be
-- by inches --
missed, our pictures
are evidence
covered in fingerprints
and each tunnel fears ending
but must make light
of its predicament

or fly down flights
of stairs
cartoon drawings
of you and i
have at once begun
a war on paper
and covered with cuts
we'll emerge

but here in my shoes
you stand
a chance
and you're down because you're up
too early again

and victoria,
my crowded heart
will always miss you

  • I've come back to read this about five times. I think it's great.
  • Thank you very much. I wrote this right around Christmas 2005 after a terrible break-up. I am very partial to this piece because it's one of the only things I've ever written that I feel truly says everything it needs to.
