in the car the night before you left for freshman year of college

we walked casually through basements smelling of starch and iron ore
eyes wandering feeling walls covered in chipped pealing paint
lungs conducting an orchestra of breath, crescendo after crescendo
outside an audience of leaves rustling, applauding for hope
expanding like seven billion comic-book-superhero galaxies and growing
but beware of cracked-door closets in dark rooms
eyes menacing and unseen except by audiences
heed the warnings of narrators
and the volume of low dark clouds, discarding the sea
this heat far from home does not make me sweat but makes me long for short attention spans and more time
the irony is fluent in other languages
canyons these days are crossed in single steps
witness the protection! sold to thieves: freedom!
hide your belongings in a safe to make sense
entire landscapes have been destroyed by faint whispers
fight the stairs all the way up
i spent all day suffering, lungs punctured then patched
marrow leaking out and rusting my aluminum excuse for a skeleton
nothing left of me but my textbooks on surgery, appendixes intact
hope is a four-letter word
