slowly we migrated
magnetic north and windburned
tying our tongues to poles that refused to freeze
the natives unlearned their own languages
wrote laws to better accomodate rapists
and discipline parents

we had buried our shovels
we refused to remove the irons from our burning shirts
we just sat there laughing
before we knew it we were out of soap
the opera was finished
the two events were somehow unrelated

the group of welders had ironically not stuck together
the artists were laughing,
the athletes had slept in, atrophied
the wind was picking up strength
picking up where it left of
there was an even newer orleans

i was not nearly as critical as people had imagined
my teeth had become dull
my eyes watery and useless
my face was full of bruises
my body was frail and shaking on a frozen curb
the sun had risen in syracuse

it wasn't enough
