flowers, fires,
splintering wood
defends the cabins from thieves
deep in the hearts
that saw quietly through trees
we'll begin to break in . . .

when from michigan came
a peninsula jumper
with grenades in her hands
this ragtag group
of soldiers pretending
to march to the fields . . .

the bricks are laid
the virgins are laid
the oils are virgin
the vegetables? oil.
the motors are running
but the traction is missing
man the trumpets!
battle the morning
into the afternoon!
nine levels of hell are not enough . . .
i will never retreat
