Despair comes in looming steelcrete human pen challenging the sky,
Pitiful sculpted rock jarring at vast, blue eternal.
Despair comes in idiot shrieks ricocheting down tile hall within,
Bouncing shouts of nothingness
Despair comes in old woman’s crippled knee, hobbling up shoddy stairs into shoddy house.
my grandmother
husband dead when
daughters 14,12
son 9
All left to weatherworn house
All left to weatherworn life
Despair comes in heartless city prison.
Iron bars constraining me (crying)
Iron bars fucking them (smiling).
Despair comes in
dead moon rising over
bastard man into
bastard sky.
Despair comes tattered uncle sent to retail-prison,
saw two men killed
another hung
saw through God when he was nine.
saw many others like himself.
(Incarcerated for insurance fraud)
Despair comes in drunken phone call
Made to unobtainable angel! Futile ramble!
Feeble Life.
Despair comes in like a whirlwind! Swirling in those hollow human shells!
I forever Shouting!
they forever vacant.
Despair comes in death of home, place of birth.
slicing through deceiving campus
slicing through deceitful brain
Despair comes in fretting mother – paranoid!
The world might corrupt her baby…
(too bad it already has)
Despair comes in dead friends
Innocent girl she was so feeling,
Evil Circumstance, He forced my kneeling
Despair comes in!
Gangly, Rotten arms
hugging the Fat, Rotten World!

Wow, intense. I ended up reading it several times, alot of stories of despair. My favorite lines are, " Despair comes in drunken phone calls, made to unobtainable angel!" Been there, oh so been there. Also, "saw through God when he was nine." Been there also, just wasn't nine, took me alittle while longer. You've also inspired me, I am going to try to write my own despair poem. Thanks #X.

  • I'm glad you found it to be intense, the feeling of intense, almost ominpresent despair was what I was going for. Thanks for the feedback bud, and glad you liked it! I'm a fan of the "drunken phone call to unobtainable angel" line too. Honestly, there are few things more desperate and saddening than making a drunken plea to someone and realizing how unobtainable they really are. Good luck on your poem, I'll be sure to read it.
