I've got 29 hours in Boston. where should I stay, what should I do?

edited April 2008 in The Porch
Like some of you, I am staying in Mansfield saturday and monday. I am looking forward to spending an evening in Boston on Sunday and monday afternoon.

My questions are these: What train do I take into the city from Mansfield, what stop do I get off at to find the most fun things to do without a car?

Also If anyone has a suggesstion as to a place to stay I would appreciate any help! Also, I'll have an Irishman in tow, so I'll need a good Irish pub!

Thanks all

Not to mention you WILL pay through the nose for tix. They have sold out every home game since 2003. I got one standing room, monster seat for a yankees game last year... $465.

If you have to go to an Irish pub there are a bunch near Quincy Market. The Purple Shamrock and the Black Rose are two good ones. However, the best pint of Guinness in town is at a restaurant called Jacob Wirth. If you like Italian food go to the North End. Every restaurant is good. There are 50 Italian rest. there.
The best train to take is Franklin line. http://www.mbta.com/schedules_and_maps/rail/lines/?route=FRANKLIN
you will need a car to get to the station, though. What kinds are you interested in. To just pick random shit makes it hard. There is a lot you could do.

Which is funny because isn't that a German Restaurant? I am not saying they don't pour a good pint as I have never been there. Just saying it's kinda funny.

I think its by the Prudential center, good food. Smith and Wolinsky has some great food as well. I went to Fenway last year when Yanks played the Red sox in April. We got swept. Game 1 looked good until our bullpen imploaded, downhill from there. Me and a bunch of my friends stayed at the regency Hyatt in Cambridge.Very nice by the river. You can take a jog, or just walk across the bridge into Boston.Very accesible. Boston has a nice charm about it, too bad my Yanks have fallen on some rough times, other than that I had a blast

    Have fun

I live in LA but I have been to Boston a few times. Just got back, as a matter of fact. Here are the things I would do (minus the Red Sox game, if they are out of town):

    1. Tour Fenway Park. They do tours every hour. Cool if you are a baseball fan.
    2. Eat. North End has awesome restaurants. If you like seafood, go to Neptune Oyster. It is incredible, in my opinion. Union Oyster House is good too, and it is the oldest restaurant in the country.
    3. You could do a guided tour. The Duck Tours are popular, but they are a little cheesy.
    4. Walk along the Freedom Trail. It will take you to a bunch of historic sites, and it is free.
    5. Boston Harbor, Boston Common, Newbury Street, blah, blah, blah. It is a cool town.

Whoever suggested going to bars in Quincy Market should be shot.

If you want a good bar, go to the Last Drop on Marlborough and Massachusetts or People's Republic on Massachusetts in Cambridge.

Some of my favorite things to do in my old city: check out the amazing old houses on Beacon Hill and on Marlborough Street in the Back Bay; go to a game at Fenway; coffee shops in Harvard Square; concerts at the Middle East in Cambridge; and eat at any number of restaurants in the North End (Giacomo's is my favorite).

Here's my list of things I may do:

    1) Freedom Trail
    2) Urban Advan Tours - Bike Tour
    3) Fenway tour
    4) Newbusy Street
    5) NE Holocaust Memorial
    6) Castle Island - (relax, beach, watch planes)

As for food Pizzeria Regina and Mike's Pastries for dessert is worth the trip to the north end for sure. More of a lunch thing. Not sure about dinner.

Yeah, but they have like 30 beers on tap. They are supposed to have the most different types of beer on tap in N.E. (so they say).

Dude, he said "Irish" bars and for someone from out of town who doesn't know the area and not make them run all over the place I came up with those because they are easy to find. Duh. You have them bouncing all over the fucking place. They only have 1 day and they don't know the area. BTW, Giacaomo's is overrated. Just because they have a huge line outside doesn't make it good.

Take the Mansfield commuter rail up to Back Bay. Do a Duck Tour or the Freedom Trail for some professional sightseeing. Go to the 'Top of the Pru' (Prudential Building). Black Rose in Faniel Hall has always been my favorite, but others have good suggestions as well.
I love to turn you on

OR.... you could blow off Boston and hang in Providence at the marina with me, drinking, catching some rays and listening to music on my boat.

You said in an earlier post that you're staying at the Red Roof in Mansfield. If that's true, you definitely don't want to take the Franklin Line train, as someone suggested (I don't think there's a Franklin stop within 10 miles of there). The Mansfield stop on the Providence/Stoughton Line (http://www.mbta.com/schedules_and_maps/rail/lines/?route=PROVSTOU) is less than a mile down 106 (Chauncy St) from the Red Roof. If you're going into Boston on Sunday you should know that trains only run every 2 hours, with the last train from Boston leaving at about 11 p.m. And be careful on Monday because not all trains stop at Mansfield. Get off at either Back Bay or South Station, the last two stops.

Only a Yankees fan would suggest Cheesecake Factory or Cheers. Those are two of the only places you can walk into wearing a Yanks hat and not expect to get punched in the face by some guy named Sully (because nobody there will actually be from Boston).

The Black Rose is a decent Irish Pub, but the whole Fanueil Hall area is going to be swarmed with tourists. I'm a big fan of the Warren Tavern (est. 1780) in Charlestown (http://www.warrentavern.com) if you want to stray from downtown. You have to take the subway (orange line) up there, but the food is good, the view is amazing and there are some cool historical sites in the area. The Institute of Contemporary Art (http://www.icaboston.org) on the waterfront is pretty cool if you're into art.

Providence has some great restaurants, too (must be all those Johnson & Wales grads) and it's a shorter train ride. Also, their strip clubs are much better than Boston's. I'm just sayin'.
*Does not include encore of Garden and Leash.

The Freedom Trail has been mentioned a couple of times. It's easily walkable and you'll see a fair amount of our fair city in the process. AND there are so many bars along the route that you could make it a pub crawl...

Check out Faneuil Hall and Newbury St.

The Public Gardens will be in bloom so that might be worth the walk through.

If you want beer check out the Sunset Bar and Grill (their beer menu is 10 times bigger than the food menu) in Brighton and from there you can take a quick cab to Cambridge to either the Middle East or TT the Bear's for a few bands.

The Back Bay and South End are wicked pissa'.

Stay away from Fanuil Hall unless you like tourists. Sox are out of town during the concert weekend so Kenmore Sq. will be Lame.

Boylston street would keep you busy for more than a day, shopping, eating, drinking, partying, puking. Maybe in that order.
