sitting duck

father left her
to swim on her own
mother doesn't notice she's sinking
with no flock to guide her
and no wake to follow
she's slowly drowning
so numb she can't even feel
the water rising

wings frantically flapping
she fights the dark raging waters
endless days, frightful nights
reality and illusion intertwine
sink or swim?, sink or swim?
a flash of light, a yearning heart
and she is swept to the surface

paddling with all her might
she makes it to the shore
the wind dries her wings
the sun warms her heart
she sleeps on the land
and it is here that she waits
a snowflake falls in May
