Light Years ahead

Years ago my friend and I picked up a hitchhiker. We were both impared. I shouldnt have been driving . When this guy got into my car i heard him say shit. and then asked if we were impared. We said no, of course not and started to drive.
The Thumbers was wearing cammo pants ,a hat.
His face was covered in scars. Big ugly scars. It made it difficult to look at him.
I even remember the song 'light years' was playing. He said he liked this song. So we started talking. He seemed very unusual. His face was horribly maimed but his attitude and confidence said he had never been scarred.
I remember he smiled and laughed. and when i looked at him in my rearview he became self consious and asked if i was staring at his scars. I told him no. that he looked familair for some reason. He said maby i knew him before his accident.
My friend began questioning him about his accident. and scars. This made me feel uncomfartable and told him to be polite. But he kept at it. Even pointing that the guys scars didnt seem real. Our passenger was just about in tears and i finally told my friend "ill put the leash on you.
The Thumber asked me if I wanted to go to his friends trailer and drink. I didnt want to so we dropped him off. After causing this guy more emotional scars with my scary impaired driving and by friend berating him about his situation.
YEARS later a co-worker asked me about it. I didnt remeber. BLACK OUT. The thumber is his friend. A very nice guy. and even an accomplished artist. The incident even inspired some art from him. and when he found out i was working with his friend he even attempted a practical joke on me. Talk about sensitive artist eh.
I forgot the whole insident until recently. i thought i saw the same guy. on the hiway. thumbing again...
I wanted to pick him up and apologize. Sorry i forgot. sorry about my bad attitude driving.
Next time i see you hitchiker. im picking you up, and I will drink with you

I once wrote a little ditty about someone I saw on a highway, but not in much detail, as I didn't pick this person up because they were going the other way. It's somewhere on here called Southwest of Charleston...about a month or so ago...again, similar but different story.
B: compassion. never judge a book by its cover. you never know who that person may be. and when you may run into them again and how it might affect you
very true - that's what makes it good!
