They lie there
shimmering like the scales of a phantom fish
forgotten long ago
a mother trying amuse a crying child
the broken man, exhausted all options
the young couple unaware of hardships ahead
the jilted loved trying to bring her back
how many wishes have been made
how many came true
how many have been snatched
by the teen rebel unaware
of the hope he steals from the desperate
i wonder have you ever tossed a penny
wishing as it splashes that things could go back
i continue to wish for your wish
but deep down i know all my dreams
will remain forever at the bottom of the wishing well

It reminded me of the goldfish pond in the conservatory. I remember arriving one day to see a homeless man with his arm in the water--he looked so sheepish as I walked in and he knew I'd seen him!
