Just Outside Monterey (Song Lyrics)

Yesterday I found myself
Out drunk and wandering
Through cattle
Just outside Monterey

Two days before
I was begging a whore
For some money I'd given her
That very same day

I was stopped by a cop
Who took from me my car
When I asked for a ride
He dropped me off by the bar
And while the drinks weren't cheap
They allowed me to sleep
And kept my legs from wandering too far

The full, weightless moon
Picked me up like a balloon
Dragged me out of the trench that I'd dug

Though my car had been towed
I was back on the road
Although this time
I was traveling by thumb

The drivers were shady
A con, and some crazy lady
Who popped a pill every time she felt sane

But beggars can't choose
And I had nothing to lose
And no one but myself to blame

Wouldn't you guess
We got in a wreck
Took a left
When we should have taken a straight

As she panicked in fright
I disappeared in the night
And wound up here
Somewhere just outside Monterey

Whether moonlit or starlit
Lovelit or barlit
Something always lights the way home

Through raindrops and teardrops
My gut tells me to fear not
Cause the moment I settle
Is the moment I'm gone
I waited all day
you waited all day
but you left before sunset
and I just wanted to tell you
that the moment was beautiful
just wanted to dance to bad music
drive bad cars
watch bad tv
should have stayed for the sunset
if not for me
