Is Riot Act an 80s concept album?

edited January 2008 in The Porch
I can't be the only one that gets an 80s vibe from many of the songs on there. Mainly Ghost, You Are, Get Right, Ghost, Green Disease, but others.

Its not really hair metal or pop. Some are pop-punkish sounding and some are more like those cheesy rock songs you hear in 80s movies or something, and then they tried to make art out of it. You can hear it the (pretty terrible) guitar solos in songs like Ghost or I am Mine.

Every time I hear Green Disease or Get Right I think of a sweaty Eddie singing while flashdancing with a headband. I like Green Disease, but its hard to take seriously when the music is so peppy.

I can't explain it very well but I know I hear 80s music in Riot Act.

I know what you are getting at. I don't know about that Flashdance stuff though

I don't think that was the intent though, I just think alot of PJ's influences are from 80's punk

    WTF?

I know R.A. is pretty crappy, but damn you don't have to over-analyze it.

Can somebody please tell me why Get Right is hated on so much around here?

It's a solid rocker IMO and a nice departure from the "usual" Pearl Jam songs that were getting pumped out in the mid 90's.

People need to get their heads out of the early-mid 90's in my opinion..

I totally agree with the 80s comment and that was my first impression when I heard the album. Riot Act is a very 1980s influenced album, whether it be the Ramones, The Smiths, Bruce Springsteen, U2 and so on..
  • The only 80's influence I hear is The Smiths on You Are, but the band admitted that before the album was even released, but Matt didn't know it at the time, after he let Jeff (I think it was Jeff) listen to it he told him it was similar, but not a copy of, What Time Is Now. Other than that, I don't hear any 80's influence.

I don't feel it's their best sounding album, but it doesn't sound 80's to me. Next thing you're going to tell me is that Corduroy is influenced by Cyndi Lauper. You hear what you want to hear in many cases.

yeah thats an easy one to hear. A lot of songs have a lot of Bruce too, minus the sax. Green Disease reminds me of a Pixies song but i can't remember which one.

Sorry, but the solo in I Am Mine can only be described as "limp-dick". Pretty much Mike's worst effort ever. Sounds like he didnt want to be there.
