  • Is anyone going to see Shihad/Datsuns this summer? Personally I'm lookin forward to the Datsuns the most. Christian is an awesome guitarist and he reminds me soooo much of Jimmy Page. I seeing them in Welly on the 6th.

Yip. Should be a good gig. We're going St James, 27th. I think there's meant to be a nice poster for the shows too, if anyone's interested.

I'm gonna go to this if tickets are still on sale..are they? I'm just listening to AIC as an inside, what great times. Wish they'd tour with Duvall (new lead singer, obviously no Layne but i'd stil love to see em)
Its been 8 years, but I still believe...PJ in NZ 06!

  • Holy crap it was a fucking awesome gig. After shaky hands i said to my mate "Man it would be mint if both bands came out and played a cover like I See Red." So anyway The Datsuns and Shihad do the usual sets. Shihad comes back for the encore and Jon says "We'd like to welcome the Datsuns back to the stage. Give it up for the motherfucking Datsuns". I was like damn this is cool. They played some song I've never heard before which was good. Then Jon says "Ok were gonna try a song we only learnt yesterday." Then ripped into I SEE RED. Holy Fuck!!! I waited around for ages to get my poster signed. Talked with Jon and Christian about I See Red. They didnt believe me about predicting it. Real nice guys. Got signatures from all of them cept Phil Datsun. Was a good night!!!

PS: gonna take my poster to the framers.

    Yeah man, that was fan-fucking-tastic.

I'd been waiting to go to a show that would totally absorb me for ages. My November 06 was stacked with shows I was expecting to take me away, but nothing really turned out like I was hoping:

    1) John Mayer at St James, Auckland - John was awesome, but this was the worst concert crowd in years - So many people up the front standing like zombies, and looking at you like you're an asshole if you actually seemed to be enjoying yourself.

    2) Pearl Jam at Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne x 3 - These were supposed to be the centrepieces, but having my girlfriend drop out the night before we were to fly out because her passport expired two years ago, getting violently ill before the first show after indulging in a single Beer (and a glass of wine at lunch time), then getting busted outside the venue by the one person who was interested in buying my girlfriends ticket (despite my efforts to sell it online), who turned out to be a federal investigator for scalpers, then proceeding to spew my guts out, spend most of the show in the first aid room, and end up in the hospital on a drip till 4am, and remain sick in bed for the next two days (dragging myself out on Tuesday for the second show, which I managed to get through without spewing again), before finally coming right for the third show (which I have to say, was pretty awesome - Thank God I bought tickets for all 3 shows), kinda put a dampener on proceedings...

    3) U2 at Mount Smart Stadium in Auckland - After my Melbourne experience I managed to come into this one with out too much expectation, even though I am a long time U2 fan. But somehow, I managed to stand in the one spot (a quarter of the way dowm the stage, on The Edge's side) that the biggest wall of speakers I've ever seen, somehow managed to avoid, on a perfectly still night. This was the quietest rock show I've been to in my life - from where I was standing they weren't much louder that the warm up music at most shows, and were easily drowned out by the mediocre crowd (and every song was dominated by my friends singing from behind me). I had to fucking concentrate to hear the music! You don't go to a rock show to concentrate, you go to be absorbed! I finally decided that I was actually cursed when I spoke to various people after the show, who were watching at different positions around the stadium and who generally agreed that from where they were, the sound was quite loud...

Shihad and the Datsuns, Wellington Town Hall, 6 Jan 2007:
Now that's what I was waiting for. I haven't got into a show like that for ages. It had been more than a year since I last saw Shihad, longer since the Datsuns. People said to me the Datsuns looked kinda tired compared to previous performances, but if that's tired then Whoa! Shihad's new songs sound really promising - catchy, but still definitely Shihady (as opposed to Pacifiery). And I can't remember the last time I saw Jon Toogood so excited to be playing back home in Wellington. The first Shihadatsuns song was Gates of Steel by Devo, a song Shihad covered on the Deb's Night Out EP. They used to play it on old Channel Z (pre-1999). Watching Dolf and Jon singing in synchronisation was like someone had pasted two amazingly kick ass shows together right in front of you. It was one of those moments where you're there and you think to yourself "Man, this is one of those moments!". Hell yeah. And then they rip out I See Red? In my home town? Fuck, that has to be my concert highlight of the year, and it's barely even started. That was as good a moment as from any show I've ever seen, including our beloved…

On another note, I saw a guy at the show in a red Mookie T-shirt. I got all excited like I'd seen an old friend. "Mookie!" I yelped quietly as he entered the hall. Felt kinda strange heckling a stranger (I'm, not much of a heckler), but it's Mookie! Eventually I talked to the guy in the foyer. He seemed kinda weirded out (as most people would when some stranger starts a conversation from your T-shirt), but it was cool to talk to someone else who'd made the lunge across the ditch to see Pearl Jam - He went to the 1st Sydney show. Wait a minute... you're.... you're reading this right now aren't you? I see you......

By the way, if any of you see a lanky 20-something guy with brown hair walking around Wellington with a BLUE Mookie T-shirt on (once it finally arrives), feel free to stop him for a chat....

That sucks, but you can't get busted for scalping if you sell your ticket for face value. You were selling for face value, weren't you? ;)
  • I was at that gig in Welly too!!! Saw the guy in the red mookie Tee. I was the guy with the glasses and the Tshirt with Jeff da Maori on the front.

Yeah, by the time I got to Rod Laver I was willing to take whatever I could get for it. I think he asked up how much, but I can't remember if we had a chance to reply before he whipped out his badge. I gave him my sob story (including the first round of chucking I'd just done), and he let us off with a warning. Apparently over in Melbourne you can't sell your tickets outside the venue, whatever the price.

Can't say I recall. I was in my red general electric T-shirt. Probably bumped into eachother in the pit...

I'm really glad you could make it down for the gig though, you definitely deserved to be there!

  • Ugh. Don't you hate it when you write a great message but then something stuffs up and you whole thing disapears? This version will be less charismatic. I can feeel it.

Yeah I saw someone at the Wgtn Shihadatsun show in a PJ tour shirt from Argentina 2005. Tall guy with glasses. Rep-re-sent!

Anyway, that was a great show, but then it always is when Shihad plays the Town Hall. Afterwards I discovered some funky coloured bruises on my legs that I don't remember receiving but hey, that's just what happens when your thumping around with the boys (I grew up with brothers. Can you tell?). I can't understand those people who go to a rock show and just stand at the back of the room. Egh, what a waste of 50 bucks.

As I was there with a young friend (a rock trainee) we decided to go up and get stuff signed after the show. I had swiped the running list from the sound desk (the setlist was already gone), so I got that signed, along with my jeans...yeah ok thats pretty fangirl of me, I know "Hey can you sign my leg?" *attractive but red and sweaty girl flops knee onto table in front of rockstar and points to thigh*... They had a small rip in the knee so I probably won't wear them much and I was there with an excited teen so I thought "Why not?". Plus I love those jeans, and it gives me a good reason to keep them ;)

We got a kiss and a hug from Jon and Karl, which was cool at the time, except now I'm coming down witth a cold or something. I probably caught it off Jon's face, from someone else he kissed. Ew. (BTW for the girls - Jons skin is so soft. It's like he doesn't grow facial hair at all. Silky). They seem like really nice guys. Tired, but then you would expect that after such a rockin show.

    In Pearl Jam news:
I'm starting to get over missing out on PJ bcos I didn't renew my passport. Danan made me listen to the bootlegs of the Melbourne shows I should have seen with a slideshow of photos from each concert. It was both fun and sad (pissed off my flatmates) but I've been on a PJ hiatus since then to get over it. Maybe next week I'll ween myself back on track. I really need to listen to the Avo album again.

I was standing at the back next the sound desk. Still sounds good there. Don't worry I've had more fare share of moshpits so I'm not a nanna. I was jumping around a bit. But last time I saw the Had at Town Hall I broke my glasses in the pit. This time I didn't feel like getting crushed. Plus I wanted to observe the bands from afar. Jon's a real cool guy. So's Christian Datsun. Kinda funny how this gig has bought the kiwi thread back to life even though it's not even related to Pearl Jam.

I guess I got lucky then! I was also trying to sell tickets outside but for Melbourne 3. I ended up selling them for $75 a piece so I don't see how anyone could have a problem with that. I mean after scoring last minute front row seats from teh box office, even the box office lady didn't seem to mind me standing next to their window trying to offload my Row Ms.

  • Hi All,

We are still looking for a drummer for our PJ Covers/Tribute band. If you think you can help us out check out my thread in the Musicians and Gearheads section or email me at paul23@actrix.co.nz.

We are ready to hit the practice rooms and start jamming on some songs with the hopes of gigging in the not to distant future.

Cheers, and sorry about the random post :)
    Paul.

last time i spoke to karl k. was moments before pj came on stage at queens wharf in '98. i found out afterwards they would have played support but they were too expensive (!) - imagine that - pj & shihad double bill in welli.

maybe someones mentioned this already but i can't be arsed reading this entire thread.

just add me to the (hopefully ever-growing) list of nz fans.

they'd better not pass us by a third time. once was painful. twice was just plain insulting. what did we do that they don't love us anymore, huh???

Just got lucky! They were available from the box office outside Rod Laver an hour or so before the show started!

Does anyone have Rialto channel on Sky? I think Jools Holland with PJ was on a couple of weeks ago but I missed it, bummer!

oh really? darn. i can never keep track of which series they're showing. they'll replay it for sure. failing that it's all on youtube (of course), although i do realise that it's not the same as watching 'em on the telly.

okay, at the risk of repeating myself (and everyone), but just because i have to say it or i'll bust, - so, like, pj don't play here coz they can't get a seated venue. but, wait, are any of these european feastivals seated?! i f**kin doubt it. i really hate it when people are inconsistent. and i really hate getting emails from 10C offering me tickets to shows on the other side of the frickkin world. well, today i hate it. i'll be over it by tomorrow i guess. vent ends here.

  • I think Vector is going to be finished sometime this year. In time for the relocated netball world champs. So maybe by the time the next tour rolls around they will actually play here. Would be great if it was a 3 night stint. Me and Dean are gonna make a HUGE sign that says "THE WAITING DROVE ME MAD".

Are Supernova still playing there in March? I thought the Chilis would come in April and play there but no word yet.

    Bloody oath we are.

Man, I reckon I would throw up violently if I had to attend a Supernova concert. I reckon Tool will play there later in the year (heard on good word) and Chilis might in April as well.
