Sleepy Sheep People

I start out on the right
like I always do from habit
Seems the safer way, most times
(a little slower, but it’s safe)

The crazy puppets on a string
going zing just to my left
in a train seem so insane
(I just go slower, but it’s safe)

So I plod on, going smoothly
take one hand off, find my groove
sip my coffee ‘til I find that
I’m constricted and can’t move

Sleepy sheep people
In a heap, people
Just over 40
Where’s the joy?
Where’s the glory and the freedom?
Where’s the boys inside those toys?

So I jump into the left lane
where the insane
form their train

But there’s someone tapping brakes
and I see that it just takes
one lone asshole who’s asleep
driving like a lone lost sheep
had to pass an old slow goat
and got itself in way too deep

Now the red lights are in both lanes
and the drivers on the left
curse and honk and slam the brakes on
and the right’s same as the left!!

So I copy the sheep
and slam on my brakes
cursing and wondering
what it might take
to buy me a chopper
(avoids all the coppers)

Add a level just above this two-lane world
so I can hover
so I don’t have to follow the herd
to the slaughter
to the slaughter

this is, for me, an excellent and well written poetical description of traffic, traffic jams and the mentality of changing lanes to get ahead.. only to find that you're back to where you were, behind the same bastard you tried to pass a mile before..

and a wish to rise above it all

    i can't drive 55 (or less)
Down the street you can hear her scream youre a disgrace
As she slams the door in his drunken face
    And now he stands outside
And all the neighbours start to gossip and drool
He cries oh, girl you must be mad,
What happened to the sweet love you and me had?
Against the door he leans and starts a scene,
And his tears fall and burn the garden green

but i have driven the 405 in LA, during rush hour.. some such madness, eh?
Down the street you can hear her scream youre a disgrace
As she slams the door in his drunken face
    And now he stands outside
And all the neighbours start to gossip and drool
He cries oh, girl you must be mad,

And his tears fall and burn the garden green

and to fly above them is so much easier in Cali. I lived there 11 years and still miss it. Especially when it snows.

Oh, but that's another poem. Never mind. : )
