I know someone, with a dog called Homer (as in The Iliad and The Odyssey, and nothing to do with The Simpsons).

I also know someone, with a dog called Dido (named after the character in Virgil's The Aeneid, and nothing to do with any English singer).

Euhm ... I actually meant pet names as in "tender, sweet names for the ones we love"

can't really imagine calling your significant other "Homer" :p

But hey, I'm not judging anyone here :)

You said pet names. That generally means names for pets.
  • Sweetness. Named for REM's "Sweetness Follows". RIP Sweetness.

A professor of mine had a cat named Boswell and one named Grendel.
  • I see now that I have totally misunderstood your post.

How about sweet fish? Butter cake? My little cabbage (quoting Pepe Le Pew)?

    Okay, here's a figurative trope.
