Billy Corgan blames Cubs playoff flop on Eddie Vedder

Posted by: The SI Staff

Billy Corgan (above) implied Eddie Vedder jinxed the Cubs.FTR caught the Smashing Pumpkins at Philadelphia's Tower Theater in October 2007. And while it's easy to write off the band's reunion as a Billy Corgan vanity project -- especially with D'Arcy and James Iha conspicuously M.I.A. -- it's equally difficult to deny the Pumps their propers. Yes, Corgan's a pretentous wanker but he's also a masterclass performer and expert musician responsible for 98 percent of his band's catalog.

Corgan also happens to be a devout Chicago Cubs fan -- perhaps explaining lyrics like "way down deep beneath my heart / lies a soul that's torn apart" -- and often opens up about his lifelong passion during shows.

Home Run Derby reports from a homecoming concert this week in Chicago, where Corgan spoke between numbers to the crowd about "All the Way," the Cub-themed song Eddie Vedder recorded earlier this season. Corgan seems to believe the Pearl Jam frontman, a former Chicago native, torpedoed the team's chances of ending its century-long title drought by writing the ditty.

If … If … IF … the Cubs did have a chance this last year that just passed … [expletive] Eddie Vedder killed that [expletive] dead. Last I checked Eddie ain’t living here, Okay?

Eddie ain’t living here to write a song about my [expletive] team.

Nothing like a feud between fortysomething alt-rock legends to spice up the Hot Stove League.

What say you, Cubs fans? Did Vedder's song pump you up? Or, like Corgan, did you see the writing on the wall?

Sounds about right...writing a song causes a team to play poorly and lose a series.

Why does Corgan hate Eddie and Pearl Jam so much? Is it because SP suck and he wishes his band could be half as successful as PJ? I remember he singled out a kid at his show last year for wearing a Pearl Jam shirt.

    Billy Corgan is an asshole!

  • Well, I blame Corgan for the destruction of one of my favorite bands and I could give a shit about the Cubs.
All I have to do is revel in the everyday....then do it again tomorrow

They say every sin is deadly but I believe they may be wrong...I'm guilty of all seven and I don't feel too bad at all
  • It's that attitude that has killed Billy's career. I know a lot of '90s Smashing Pumpkins fans that were not interested at all in this so-called "reunion." And being a world-class dick doesn't help things.

    Here is another article:

This guy says he doubts Corgan can beat Vedder.

I was only a casual Smashing Pumpkins fans so I don't know the relationship they had with their fans, but we all here know how unique Pearl Jam's us with us. I know some of the things Pearl Jam does now is standard but they were ahead of it - tickets, bootlegs, benefit shows, etc. "Squandered their opportunity?" Speak for your self. Did he use his popularity / position of power to change anything? Did he try to rally the other bands to change the music business? If there's some noble cause he undertook, like, for example, oh, maybe taking on a giant corporation to keep ticket prices low for their fans, let me know and I'll shut up.

    I know you're just being sarcastic...but

Technically, they didn't write the song, but Dropkick Murphys released the single "Tessie" in August of 2004 and the Red Sox went on later that year to win the World Series.
    was it?....

    Oh gee let's see here...

Smashing Pumpkins- just got back into touring with only 1/2 the original members and calls it a 20th anniversary tour. What a joke. They are playng in small venues across the country.

PJ- has been touring consistently the past 18 years, selling out in full size arenas, withOUT the help of mtv, music videos, and excessive advertisements.

    Corgan is jealous.

I have to disagree with you, long red... I don't think it's tongue in cheek at all. Corgan may have said that he respects Ed in the past, but lately that doesn't seem to be the case.

At a Smashing Pumpkins show over the last year or 2, Corgan chastised a fan for wearing a Pearl Jam shirt. He then said something like, isn't everybody sick and tired of Eddie Vedder? He's also said that Ed's anti-war stance is absurd. Now, he's been quoted as saying, "[expletive] Eddie Vedder killed that [expletive] dead. Last I checked Eddie ain’t living here, Okay? Eddie ain’t living here to write a song about my [expletive] team."

None of those things sound very friendly to me. It just sounds like Billy exercising the low maturity and intelligence that he's famous for.
