She chased you down the street
And all you could do was run.
Run as though your life depended on it.
You ran not to save yourself,
You ran because you could not stop.
You saw not the face of beauty—
Bewitched eyes saw instead
The face of guilt.
It was a monster that chased after you
Or so you pretended to believe.
You were in a game dreamt
By your delirious mind.
A game of chase began and you ran
With pearly white teeth ablaze.
Silent giggles laced your face
In the nervous exhilaration
Of your situation.
But once your monster no longer ran
You blinked your smiling eyes
And saw your porcelain angel
Stop and puff for breath.
And even before she produced
A shrill scream that penetrated your heart—
Before she threw her hands up in anger—
Before tears streamed down her face
Mixed with sorrow and anger
Before she turned her back on you…
You knew you had lost her.
You knew your game was over.
Your fantasies of monsters and adventure
Exploded – reality took over.
She wasn’t going to play your games
She had tired of your fictitious dreams
Reality is her world –
No amount of charm and love
Could bring her to your fairyland.
For years she fed you reality…
For years you spit it up.
You chose.
You chose
Your comical fancies
Instead of her and her realities.
You played your selfish game
And now years later she is gone –
You ran too fast – you ran too hard –
You ran and lost your golden prize.
So you crumbled to your knees
And watched her silhouette
Stalk down the city-lighted boulevard.
You sat there and you crumbled.
You crumbled and you cried.
You cried and you died
Leaving her – in all her heartache
And pain – FREE
Of her delirious lover
