I think it would be fun to make up our own lyrics to yellow ledbetter and post them.. funny serious.. you name it. Everyone would be able to hear them the same.

Could you post what the lyrics are, and then we could work from there?

Here's the lyrics, Ms. Haiku. :)

    Unsealed
On a porch a letter sat
Then you said 'I wanna leave it again'
Once I saw her on a beach of weathered sand
And on the sand I wanna leave it again... yeah
On a weekend I wanna wish it all away yeah...
And they called and I said that I want what I said
And then I call out again
And the reason oughta leave her calm i know
    I said 'I don't know whether
I'm the boxer or the bag'
    Ah yeah ehh....
    Can you see them
    Out on the porch
    But they don't wave
I see them round the front way yeah
And I know I don't want to stay...

    Make me cry <guitar solo>

    Ooooh I see
I dont know there's something else
I wanna drum it all away
    Oh I said i don't, I don't know whether i'm a boxer or the bag
    Ah yeah ehh....
    Can you see them
    Out on the porch
    But they don't wave
I see them round the front way yeah
And I know I don't want to stay
    I dont wanna stay (2x)
    Don't
    Don't wanna
    Oh... yeah... oooh...

What I thought were the lyrics are absolutely nothing like what they really are. I kindof focused on "box or bag" not knowing it was "boxer or bag" and I thought it was an anti-war song i.e, person returns in a box or a bag. I think what I thought were the lyrics were much more interesting hahahahahahaha :D

on the chair a letter sat
Then they said, let's burn it like them
Just a chance to leave muffled omen
then on the sand they'll leave the ashes again . . .yeah

On a weekend I wanna wish it all away yeah...

And he called, and he said that his brother was dead
and I flicked the lighter again
And the reason oughta leave them calm i know

I guess the badly scribbled images are the interpretation of what the hell Ed is saying. What that has to do with Bernie Williams and Lord of the Rings, I have no clue.
  • To my knowledge the song was first performed with out any specefic lyrics

Mike came to the studio with the riff, the band joined in and eddie just started singing whatever.

the lyrics always change somewhat when the band performs the song live.

Ont the madison square garden dvd the lyrics relate to the war.
I think pj kind of has the intension for us (fans) to interpret the song and make it our own.

interpretations of what eddie says is fine, but i don't think we can claim to know exactly what the lyrics are.

I was basically interested in seeing how the song inspires different people, perhaps I should of stated the topic more clearly like: lyrics inspired by yellow ledbetter, or original lyrics that fit the music of yellow ledbetter.

thanks for your posts and my apologies for not being clear on my intention.

    I like the

Here's the music you make up the words

style of approaching this. Is that not what you want? I've written poetry inspired by Pearl Jam songs, but they would not go with the music (non-lyrics) section of the song. Do you have an example?

  • yea that's what i meant. At first i thought we were headed to a debate about what the lyrics of the song are. I didn't wan't different interpretations of what ed is saying in the song. that would be a fun post as well but it would be hard to distinguish the two on the same thread.

Go to the search this forum function of the Poetry, Prose, Music & Art. Enter Inspired by Pearl Jam. A few of mine are listed. I used to write poetry 10 syllables across and 14 lines down (not a sonnet, mind you) so this is my older stuff.

    I'm behind the counter
    growing older, not too tired,
though. Between taking orders from new diners
I fill coffee cups and sugar dispensers,
    joke with the cook,
    and write out sight-seeing directions.

We serve the best fries around, the ones that hit the spot
for weary couples and high school crowds
(just ignore the man with the black & white notebook.)

This may look small town to you,
but you're sitting in a Jersey diner booth.
The glorious colors of autumn always fool.

    You may think I'm common,
my life not chosen, a chalkboard still blank,
but people my age inspire music when we walk.
We've worked hard for our calluses,
    and proud of it!

If only you could see the tattoos on my shoulders.
One of the Garden State Parkway, the other an opened letter.
The Parkway tattoo - so I'll always find home.
    The opened letter

    designed by someone

    another story, eh?

    I've seen him once since

another story, some other time, alright?

    How about more coffee?

One of my best poems inspired by Pearl Jam is one inspired by Rearview Mirror. I'll see if I can find it.

Trees standing in a row beside a house
sway slightly in a light breeze; stand back up.
Trees bend slightly in a strong rain; stand back up.
    Branches broken during a thunderstorm
are sawed for firewood then forgotten.
Struck by lightning a tree falls on the house.

Those tears were not of pain. Tears my brother
cried silently; his face red and wet, his
shirt blue and gold. I stared scared and useless.
It was then I knew that what he deserved
was not violence. That Saturday at
breakfast in the same room as a straw cross.
You left a map to your place, big brother,
when you left without a backward glance.

    This is great :)

And so is the RVM one.

I love how you take a different, literally, point of view on the songs.
... and the will to show I will always be better than before.
  • back around the beginnig was inspired by yellow ledbetter I'm still trying to figure out why i posted it seperately

and thus the ed quote below
I took a walk so I could curse my ass for being dumb!!!

    www.myspace.com/lastgeneration56
  • set her world high
on a single grain of sand
all alone on his beach, in the hourglass
    the tide comes rolling in

    she fights the undertoe
and holds on to the land
is he pushing, are they pulling
    is it gravity now again

uh oh, the world keeps spinning, grinning
    she keeps learning how
oh no, another beginning, a new way of sining
    her tears start laughing now.

he walks the beach to find a simple grain of sand.
the monsters and the castles pass
from the ocean to the grass
    gently dancing with the wind.
catches a glimpse of lost time
as it changes with the day
traded his motor for a paddle
and she quietly rows away, hey now.

uh oh, the world keeps turning
he's out there burning in the sun
    oh no another begining
    without and ending,
    what has he done?

set his world high on a single grain of sand.
