That Night

Do you recall the night
when you left in the dark
a rather small dog
with a hell of a bark
your voice was brittle
and there was fear within
too young and confused
I awoke with a grin
Just happy to see you
Christmas was tommorow
I didn't ever expect
to find you full of sorrow
You had to leave
and weren't sure of a return
in a box or a bag
perhaps an urn
Do you recall the night
when you left in the dark
a rather small dog
with a hell of a bark
You asked me to promise
Never turn out like you
I smiled and nodded
what's a seven year old to do?
closing the door
you never looked back
or you would have seen
my world turn to black
when you left in the dark
a rather small dog
with a hell of a bark
your voice was brittle
and there was fear within
too young and confused
I awoke with a grin
Just happy to see you
Christmas was tommorow
I didn't ever expect
to find you full of sorrow
You had to leave
and weren't sure of a return
in a box or a bag

Adolescence in essence is all about trust.

No one needs a smile more than someone who fails to give one,
After you die...you know how to LIVE!

I remember alot of things from my childhood, good and bad. Helps me relate more and get on my own kid's level and trying to put myself in their shoes when I need to. Sometimes you go through things they don't and vice versa but there are usually situations where you can relate to their feelings so they are put at ease and don't feel alone. I think that is important to helping kids grow into healthy good people. Fortunately for me I had a good happy childhood, not problem-free but loving, stable, and nurturing, it has been my teen-adult life that has been more of a struggle, not everyone is raised in a loving home like I was. Thanks for sharing your poem!
