country

has anybody here ever written country music. Hit the lake on the weekend, and ran into a bunch of old buddies. They casually play (western) and I used to follow it myself back in the day (basically till I was sent a demo of pen cap chew) Anyways, we were sittin around playin. I pretty much started things off, and they really liked what they heard, but they pretty much stick to country. I struggled my way through, but we played around with some great tunes that brought back a lot of great memories. I really enjoyed it. evntually I just kinda spit out about a dozen lines that came to me, and they were like "who's that"...and I just kinda said I was winging it. They didn't believe me at first, but I could not remember what I sang. So now they are bugging me to write up a thing or 2. I don't know if I should. I haven't ever really tried to write country before, its not really my style, but at the same time, if I can write something somebody will like, then maybe I should. I do have a couple ideas floating around, but cantr decide if I should run with them or not.

Do I stick with what is normally in my spectrum, or do I try this, even though it may not really be my true inner speaking?

  • Hmm, I'm not a fan of shit-kicking, beer drinking, overly-proud to be a honkey tonk man or redneck girl kinda country. It's frivilous and useless, kinda like the rap tunes where everybody's got a ho and bling-bling. However, I like some country (and some rap--Fight The Power! :D:D ).

I like Dwight Yoakam. :D And I like songs with a country feel, like some by The Rolling Stones and Neil Young...

Hmmm, it's hard to say. If your heart's not in it, why would you want to write them? You say you have ideas in your head already so, you must have at least a little interest in giving it a try. :) If you're up for the challenge and can bring something fresh and exciting to the table while braodening your horizons, that's cool! Go for it! Nothing wrong with trying something knew! :)

My dad is a country and western fan so it's what I always heard growing up. Some of it is really not enjoyable, but some of it (my faves when I was little were Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton) is easy to enjoy. I even own a best of Kenny Rogers CD now. I like listening to the stories, not much rock music has a story to it, much of it is just a whole bunch of jumbled feelings. But the songs I really enjoy are the songs that I have never heard sung by the original singers, the songs that I only hear when dad gets his guitar out and him and mum or his brothers and sisters if they are around, or the neighbours who came over for a drink, all just sat around singing these classics which I had only heard sung by them. I like those songs because of the atmosphere when they are sung.

Anyway, to answer your question, if you enjoy writing a few songs while you are hanging around with your friends, then let yourself enjoy it, don't feel like you have to stop yourself because it doesn't fit in with your image. Enjoy, have fun, and while ever you continue to enjoy it you should continue to do it. When it's not fun anymore, move on.

k, well....this is EXTREMELY rough, and not even close to being completed...but here is a bit of what I have

    I clearly remember
    Our graduation day
    We danced all night long
    In the cool summer breeze
    And had sweet romance
    Champaign or whiskey

    OH
    I remember your smile
And how you sucked me in
    Just one little wink
    For feelings to begin
And when I asked your name
    Well I trembled in fear
But I knew from that moment
    That I needed you near

    Champaign or whiskey
    Come rain or come shine
    And tequila to kill
    The last memories of mine
    Avoiding the rum
That we drank in the sun
    Those memories need fade
    Since you disappeared
    Champaign or whiskey
To give toast to the town
    Champaign or whiskey
    What makes memories drown
    Champaign or whiskey
The only thing I enjoy is having no feelings....being numb rocks!

And I won't make the same mistakes
    (Because I know)
Because I know how much time that wastes

  • "Oh show me the way to the next whiskey bar" :D

Yup, dem's some country soundin' lyrics, my friend. Lamenting lost loves and heavy doses of alkee-hall to numb the pain. ;)

Very cool depop! That is good stuff! I am not the biggest country fan either but did grow up with my parents listening to 50's music and country so some of it is not bad. I think it is good to broden your horizons and be open to other things. I like a variety of very different types of music and find that some are extremely different, however, they are all very creative. You don't know if you are good at something unless you try it. If you are able to share your creative talent and are gifted enough to be able to have a broad range that appeals to people, that is fantastic! I say keep experimenting and writing if that is what appeals to you. We certainly don't mind you bouncing it off of us. :)

Certainly makes for a country song. I would like to hear you finish it. I happen to like country and the oldies are great. I remember hearing Patsy Cline and actually like to sing she's music Kareoke style. All music can be great, this country band I heard not too long ago more reminded me of Lynyrd Skynyrd and they really could play some *ss kicking guitar. So you know country isn't all hee haw. It is an oportunity to write clearly. Have fun, glad to see more diversity.

Rascal Flats and Tim McGraw are good. I also like the lady that sings "Jesus take the wheel".
