I really don't know if you will ever understand,
I don't know if your brain allows it,

I see things that you can't so you explain them away,
I am foolish because I live by faith,

You assume I don't understand that we can't pay the bills,
that we have made big messes that haunt you still,

You can't accept my strength or my support,
you can't accept my love that is filled with genuine warmth,

It is torture to watch you live through fear,
so afraid of what will happen if you let yourself feel,

You live for everyone else but yourself,
the show you portray and denial of less than perfect health,

Do you know what it is to truly be real,
to let down the disguise and admit that you're ill,

They never helped you when you were young,
you relied on yourself to carry on,

I understand why you have such great pain,
why you leaned on just you again and again,

I can not make you accept an open heart,
I can not change what happened to you from life's start,

Your lack of trust has just cause,
but when is the haunting ever enough,

If you take my hand I can't promise you perfection,
I can't tell you that life is all rainbows,
I can't say we'll always make the right decisions,

I can't promise you days without darkness and gloom,
I can't say there won't be times we can't even be in the same room,

What I can promise is my commitment and support,
that when you are ugly and love runs short,

I may not condone the things that you say or do,
I may have to walk away sometimes for all of us, not just you,

but as long as you are trying I will not give up,
because what you hide inside of you, I can see, and that's enough
