who are you in your mind?

if you can't decide
what you want to hear
how can you decide
who you want to live?

if your mind is blank
like a white paper sheet
how can you rank
who's smart and who's a wimp?

if you can't see birds fly
when you gaze at the sky
how can you ask why
of all the joy I can cry?
"Don't be faint-hearted, I have a solution! We shall go and commandeer some small craft, then drift at leisure until we happen upon another ideal place for our waterside supper with riparian entertainments."

this reminds me of a nikki giovanni poem entitled "cotton candy on a rainy day"

i think. i'll have to look it up, but something about this poem reminds of something in one of hers, the kids are pumpkin carved out, i'm heading for the books. i'll let you know.

    Choices
    By nikki giovanni

    if i can’t do
    what i want to do
then my job is to not
    do what i don’t want
    to do

    it’s not the same thing
but it’s the best i can
    do

    if i can’t have
    what i want then
    my job is to want
    what i’ve got
    and be satisfied
    that at least there
    is something more
    to want

    since i can’t go
    where i need
to go then i must go
    where the signs point
    though always understanding
    parallel movement
    isn’t lateral

    when i can’t express
    what i really feel
    i practice feeling
    what i can express
and none of it is equal
    i know
    but that’s why mankind
    alone among the mammals
    learns to cry.

(so it's in this little volume of great poems by this great poet, nikki giovanni, and emmi, your poem reminds me of this poem, which has probably shaped my life continually more than any other advice, maybe, i'm not sure, i read it a lot, which is funny because i forgot it's title. . . oh well.)
