    Piano Man breaks his silence

The mystery of the "piano man" that baffled medical experts and prompted a worldwide appeal appears to have been solved.

The stranger, who was discovered soaking wet on a Kent beach in April, did not speak but was dubbed the piano man amid reports that he shocked hospital staff with his musical skills. He has now shocked them again - this time by talking and telling them he is from Germany.

He is reported to have flown home on Saturday after confiding in the staff at the Little Brook hospital in Dartford, Kent.

A hospital source told the paper: "A nurse went into his room last Friday and said, 'Are you going to speak to us today?', to which he simply replied, 'Yes, I think I will'."

He went on: "We were all stunned. He has been with us for months and we have got nowhere with him. We thought he was going to be with us for ever."

The patient, who was found on April 8 on the Isle of Sheppey, said he was German and had been discovered by police as he was trying to commit suicide. His clothing did not bear any marks by which he could identified, and the mystery attracted amateur sleuths and well-wishers across Britain and as far afield as Japan and Germany.

The National Missing Persons Helpline was inundated with calls, emails and letters.

Initial reports said he was a skilled musician after he was said to have impressed staff with his classical music. He was said to have drawn a picture of a piano for therapists when given a pen and paper, prompting his nickname.

But he has now admitted that he does not play the piano very well and only drew one because it was the first object that came to mind.

The patient, who Kent and Medway NHS trust have not officially identified, said he had been working in Paris but lost his job. He then travelled to Britain on a Eurostar train.

Having worked with mentally ill patients in the past, he is believed to have adopted certain mannerisms in a seemingly successful bid to fool experts. The Mirror claims that the hospital is considering taking legal action against him.
