for me, rain is one of the most sensual things to write about.

what if everyone posted their poems about rain?

like a rain happening.......

here goes.

.............

and i am shattered.
desperately so.

it just about killed me.
feeling my heart again like that after all that time.

i left fragments of me in that park. that night. in the rain.

after that wet, velvet kiss that changed the world.
there is no other way.
and there never was.

Rain in California is something that requires an umbrella
    or a rain coat
    or frantic running to escape
    or special shoes

Rain in Seattle, however, is almost a given
    people don't use umbrellas
    maybe they don't own them?
or if they do, they don't bother to carry them around
people walk slowly, they don't run to escape it
students walk around in a soggy state and think nothing of it
they let it come down on them
and don't worry about being wet
they feel free to walk around with limp, bedraggled hair

    Rain in Texas is torrential
    like a tropical storm
    it comes down in sheets
    sideways
    noisy
    with huge gusts of wind
    and lightening
    and monstrous thunder
    it's exciting
    but people usually stay indoors
    to avoid electrocution

    What are the promises made,
    of this rainy day?
Sitting here with my baby girls.
Twirling my finger around Julia's curls.
    Nothing much to really do.
    Play and hug, kisses too.
    Smiling and playing peek-a-boo.
    What are the promises made,
    of this rainy day?
Holding their hearts in my unsteady hands.
Wishing for a future bright enough to understand.
As the rain cries from the sky,
and angel's tears all run dry.

I didn't have one, but when I read this post it gave me an idea, and here it is.

After our falling out I'd stay up listening to the rain,
I'd welcome it to wash away my pain.
I'd stand there, letting it, like the world, fall on me.
It cleared my mind, it gave clarity to what I'd see.
It's the only thing that comes close to me anymore.
The only one that listens is this downpour.
So I cry to it asking for help so I can let go,
It changes too, so I cry out to the snow.
But no matter the season, its always there.
It always listens, it finds me, it cares.
It's always there to cover my tears,
It's always there to drown out my fears.
I'm beginning to sink beneath the mud.
It doesn't bother me, its my brother, my blood.
The rain, the mud, swallows my pain.
It swallows me, so I can live again.
I shouldn't have to fight a battle I'll never win, just to lose those I've never had.
  • Out In The Cold (11/27/03)

I used to go walking in the rain
It was always something I enjoyed
I'd just let it pour on me
    I'd ponder
    I'd wander
    Until I was soaked
    And chilled to the bone
    And my head hurt
    And my feet hurt
    And my heart hurt
And I was too tired to go on
    Then I'd return home
Only then did your embrace almost feel warm

    Red Mulch and Rainstorms (08/02/05)

She came riding in on a red lightning bolt,
    and yet,
she was still calm before the thunderheads burst,
    pouring life into the ground,
    nourishing my hard day's work.
My thumbs are still pink, much to my dismay,
    but hope,
and Mother Nature seem to be on my side today.

    :)

Thanks, alicefell (but then she picked herself up and now alicerises :D)! Don't know if what I posted was quite what you were looking for but thanks for making us think about the rain. I love to fall asleep to a good, hard rain--it's so comforting. Makes you want to snuggle into your warm jammies, drink hot cocoa and read a good book. :)

hey there. are you kidding? it was awesome - i love your out in the cold. yes, love the rain..........

(especially this summer, here in TO....)
    there is no other way.
    and there never was.
  • It's not a poem but a song whose lyrics I wrote while listening to a clip of McCready's guitar work that was posted on either Synergy or TenClub site last summer. I think it was a thank you for a Crohns benefit or something. Anyway I started singing this while listening to it and decided to write it down for a song. It's about a guy I knew who was constantly depressed and would hoel up in his apartment for days on end. I have changed the music of course cause who the hell is going to be able to play like McCready?! LOL

    Escape 8-24-04

Open the window let the rain in
it will wash away the gray
it's not want you needed today

Open the window let the rain in
    sunshine's overrated anyway
    yesterday is still here
    it won't go away

    Let your mind rest
    heed your heart
it will send you to that higher art
    where everything plays it’s part

but if we can't look outside
everything is fear everything is dark

    but just...

Open the window let the rain in
it will wash away the gray
it's not what you needed today

Open the window let the rain in
    sunshine's overrated anyway
    yesterday is still here
    it won't go away

    lonely chorus
    reverberates through your head

    wont’ let you out bed
you stay in your cave instead

Can't you see the clock is ticking
    And babe
    you've wasted so much time
sinking into all your muddy grime
yeah, it happens to us all sometime

You brush off happiness like sand on your feet

why are you so afraid to smile
is the comfort of your desolation all worthwhile?

Open the window let the rain in
it will wash away the gray
it's not what you needed today

Open the window let the rain in
    sunshine's overrated anyway
    yesterday is still here
    it won't go away
